Hello everyone, we're heading to Lake Mountain with the kids (1 and 4) for a few days to show them the snow. Staying in Marysville. We've never been up that way so would anyone please suggest an easy day trip drive from Marysville to see the mountains and sights? Can include short walks and we can take food. Its our first trip away with our 1yo so wee'll see how we go and then maybe soon plan bigger trips. Would also like to see Lake Eildon but don't know how long a round trip would take from Marysville.
Thankyou in advance.

Boris, "easy" could depend on what you are driving.
Last Sunday I drove along the Blue Range and Quartz Creek roads & Mt Margret without any major problems except some icing late in the afternoon. Snow was fresh with a compact base. I tried to get up Green Hill Tk. for some tobogganing but couldn't get past the first bog hole (covered with snow) & couldn't be bothered fitting the chains.
With the warmer weather this week, much of the low altitude snow will possibly have melted. Lake Mountain still reports excellent cover.
The Rubicon Historic area is interesting. I think the Snobs Creek Fish Hatchery is still operating. Lake Eildon above the township is only a short hop from Marysville.
A drive along the Marysville to Woods Point road should also bring you some snow around the Triangle to Mt Matlock.
According to Parks Victoria, As at 17 July, Lady Talbot Drive and Mt Margaret Rd (just outside of Marysville) have been closed due to current snow and storm conditions.
Also check out Site Link
for other road closures in the area.
Nan & I will be staying a couple of nights in Narbetong over this weekend.

Tony is Blue Range and Quartz Creek roads the road between Marysville and Rubicon. Maybe I should get a better map instead of my road atlas. Could you suggest one. Green Hill track isnt in any of my maps either. I drive a 2000 prado vx with traction control and standard Grandtrecks and possibly a working 9500lb winch by then.
Thankyou.

Hi again Boris.
I reckon that the Rooftop series of maps are best for the Victorian mountains. The double sided big River - Rubicon - Woods Point Forest Activities Map covers this area. They are available from the ExplorOZ shop, Site Link but due to time constraints for you, maybe best to visit the Melbourne Map shop. ARB may also stock the maps. I also have the digital versions that I use with OziExplorer CE on my PDA.
Blue Range Rd goes from Mt Margret Gap to Rubicon. Lady Talbot Drive (closed) goes from Marysville to Mt Margret Gap. Mt Margret can also be accessed from the Marysville to Buxton Rd - sign posted Mt Margret and not Keppel lane, not far from Buxton. The Green Hill is North West of Mt Margret Gap
Quartz Creek Rd heads roughly East from the Blue Range Rd to the Royston River Rd
Take a shovel - very handy & good for bulk snowman creations.
New winch or repair to existing?
I have an ARB winch bar sitting in my garage ready for fitting, just waiting for the winch. I am getting a new series Iron Man that should be available in a few weeks.
I monitor UHF 15 & use the other UHF on scan so may hear you up there?
We will also pay a visit to the Blueberry farm / winery between Narbethong & Buxton. Should be a relatively tame weekend.

Tony I just bought a winch from Aldi for $299 but without a roller fairlead and today I received via Aussie Post a fairlead from a gentleman that goes by the name of Roachie(SA) on this site. Got that as a bargain too cause it came with evidence of its history and experiences that Roachie has had when it was used with his Warn winch. All my mates will look like amateurs next to me cause their fairleads are still shiny from lack of use and experiences. And I reckon it will even outlast the shiny ones, I'm proud to have it. Hopefully I'll finish fitting it to an ARB Sahara bar on Saturday. The winery sounds good. May even see you there I'll pick up a couple of bottles of red for the trip and I'll keep an ear out for you. We have an ARB and a Mapshop here in Geelong so I think I'll find the map somewhere so I can plan the trip a bit more.
Thanks for your help so far.

As Tony says go Rooftop maps, you can get them in both Marysville and at Buxton Igloo roadhouse just on north of Buxton.

Drive up the the Mt Margret rd between Buxton and Marysville for free snow

Boris,

Very nice drive from Marysville to Warburton via the Acheron Way, less than an hour and by the river for half of it. Bite to eat in Warburton then back along Woods Point Road to Reefton, Cumberland Junction, Cambarville and the tall trees, and back to Marysville. Easy hald days drive and is all below the snow line at the minute.

G'day everyone, sitting behind the public comp. at the info centre at Marysville about to take off up Mt Margaret Rd even though the locals are saying there's trees across the road. Should've taken a chain and chainsaw with me. Yesterday was too foggy to go and see anything. Whatever snow there is left on the peaks is icy hard and melting which is a little disappointing. Yesterday saw a convoy of Geelong 4WD Club cars drive through town all muddied up. Won't try the harder tracks without second 4wd yet as I'm not experienced enough and Svetlana will be too scared even though she did the 4wd training course with me in extremly wet slippery conditions thruogh the International Harvester Training hills.
Cheers. Boris
