Hi all,

Can anyone tell me what years and model of the Patrol that had the engine problems that are so well documented.

Soposed to be before 2002, but they do not have a good name for longivity in any year..
Nissan say that the problem is fixed, I guess time will tell

Fortunately, I brought a 2003 Navara. Same motor, but a lot less weight to push around, and none of the inherant problems of the patrol ( yet )

Cheers

Have the Navaras or the later utes had problems witrh the 3Lt motor?
I have not heard any stories so far . I have been led to believe that it was only in the patrol as they were trying to drag a bit more power from a small engine.

I think there has been a couple fo reported issues on this forum with the Nav ZD30 but from memory I think in at least one instance the cause was dusting through lack of maintenance.

From what I can determine the major difference between the Patrol and the Nav is that the Nav has the standard old style turbo whilst the Patrol has the variable vane which I am guessing may result in different fueling for each...only an assumption mind.

Interestingly I have been reading of some issues with the new 2.5 Nav motor blowing 'rods.

My lamo thought on the ZD30's is that the EGR is what causes the pistons to crack due to pouring huge amounts of heat from the exhuast onto the rear of the motor...

This would also be explained by the common EGR failures in the ZD30 motors.

The reason that the ZD30 in the navaras possibly didn't have the problems is less boost due to an older and simpler type turbo and a possibly different EGR setup. Lower boost due to not having the variable vain turbo in the Navaras would produce lower EGTs as possibly be the reason they don't experience the problems.

But it's only a guess, put together with my lack of engineering skills and just from reading lots of posts about it.

But hey, I reckon it's a decent theory.

Supposed they are OK from 2003 on but who would know. There are that many knockers and theorists about Nissan 3 litre motors it is hard to get to the real truth. There have been blow ups for sure in early motors but like a lot of things 20 people report on the same incident !
There has bee a number of letters to the Melb. Herald Sun Motoring section about the issue and in todays column there is a report that Nissan have had discussions with the writer and that soon 'all will be revealed'
The main theories run around insufficient oil and it is true the sump capacity was increased; the other one is EGR but from my reading EGR actually lowers combustion temperatures. EGR is also used in big truck motors are does not seem to cause problems there.
There is also a lot of nonsense about little motors being pushed too hard and therefore becoming unreliable. If this was true motors would still all be straight eight 7 litre inefficient lumps of iron that were thought to be the only way to get more power in the 1920's & 30's. Greater efficiency has allowed motors to produce far more power per litre than ever though possible years ago. For examplle look at the big Cat motors in trucks, 650 HP from 15 litres; 43 HP per litre are they considered to be cranking out too much power ?
Have a look in the Nissan Patrol Forum there are a lot of posts there related to this motor and lots of stories of people playing with EGR.

The series III came out commencing October 2001; prior to that the series II is the one where the engine failures occurred, although most are still on the road. For subtle differences, check out lonards;

Go with Ken's advice. Significant changes were still being made in 2002, and I understand the bulk of them were done by 2003. Best thing to do is to get 2003 or later.

Might also be worth finding out anything you can about any development of the motor in 04 and 05 if you can afford a car in that range (we got our GU new in 04 and I stopped researching after that). JD

There was no real issues from October 2001 onwards as stated earlier.
Unfortunately there is the odd case of some dill putting the wrong oil in their motor or fiddling with the motor when they should keep there hands in their pockets, then crying foul to nissan and anyone else who will listen to get nissan to cover some of the cost of the damage that dill fiddle fingers caused in the first place.
Oh .... almost forgot , most of the crap stories and rubbishing you hear is Toyota drivers bagging them to make themselves feel better after getting ripped a new one in the wallet after buying a yota at almost twice the price.
If you get one Macca, just don't fiddle unless you know how the motor re-acts (using proper test gear) and only use the exact specified oil..... simple really.
