Hey guys, I've got OziExplorer with the Hema maps of Oz which are great but I was wondering who does the topographical maps with 4WD tracks on them?
Mainly looking for
Perth and the south west of Australia.
And is it true that there's some free downloadable maps for members on this site?
Any help would be appreciated, cheers guys.

Brett,
Go to PlotSwap - you can view/download maps and plot files from there. These are 250K topo maps that are excellent for 4WD track data but are enhanced with overlay data of plot recordings from site users which confirms driving
routes.
Alternatively, if you wish to purchase a CD there is a set of topo 50K SW WA maps there. There is no overlay data on these but very detailed so you'll see tracks there too.

Hey Michelle, thanks heaps for that, I'll have to do some downloading once we get something faster than dial up here at home. Still no broadband but I'll be looking further into the PlotSwap for sure.
Cheers again.

If you can get a hold of the latest 50k DEC maps on CD they are far superior than the older SW50k sold in the
shop here (no offence to Exploreoz) :-)
Ask around the local WA 4wd internet forums and you will find lots of info on different maps of the soutwest for Ozi.

Hello David - AFAIK the digital DEC (formerly CALM) maps Jeff is talking about (referred to as COG - CALM Operational Graphics) are provided free to SEC and other Emergency Groups. I am not sure if 4WD groups are provided them free in digital format - but some are given the paper version when doing organised trips in forest areas.
Based on my observations I think I can safely assume there is a significant "black market" in the digital COG maps - i.e. the ones Jeff suggest to get by "asking around" are without doubt of dubious parentage - a consequence of the purchase price of a legitimate digital version ~$400 from DEC (or some similar excessive price so I am told). I have never seen them advertised anywhere - assume you ring DEC and ask.
With respect to them being more up to date than the Raster 50K SWWA series sold in
shop - they would be (generally speaking) as they are created on an as need basis using latest road /track data. The COG maps can however appear a bit “busy” and they also have less coverage than the Raster 50K (plus there is no
Kimberley or
Pilbara version).
Cheers
Greg
