replacing CAV fuel filter

Hi all,
I am about to attempt to replace my CAV filter on my td42 and would like to know the correct procedure to do so.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I take it that you have a Patrol.
I find it much easier to undo both in and out fuel lines unbolt the whole thing (2 Bolts) then replace the filter and the O rings etc. Much easier and less messy. Its easiest to do on a bench or something like that. When you reinstall the filter connect the pick up line and pump the
hand pump on top until fuel comes out of the outlet. I hold a small container under the outlet to save mess. Then simply connect the outlet line and job done.
Sounds like a lot but after a couple of times it takes less than 5 minutes.

Agree with the above - similar to a Cruiser - just be aware that the silver tightening thing/ring/nut (whatever it is called) on the bottom might be very tight, as it is on
mine so just be carefull when trying to undo it. Make sure you do it up tight to stop air entering it.
Your replacement filter should come with all three 'O' rings so replace them as
well.
Should take about 5 - 10 mins.

Yep, same here. Better to remove the whole set-up and do the job away from the engine bay.

Hey Roachie or Truckster,
When I started the 3 lt after I primed it, we must have got some air in the system. It started eventually (3-4 secs) and settled down to an idle. Is there any other relief of air required elsewhere on the 3 lt (05 model) spill return??? I thought everything was ok but on restarting some four hours later it took 2-4secs of cranking to start.
Much appreciated if you could give me any idea's.

Hi Cobes,
I leave the filter assembly in place and just undo the bottom nut, try to catch as much fuel as possible, pull the filter cartridge off, put a new one on (with new o-rings) and attach glass bowl again - easy. Doesn't take long.
Just be aware if you are using ryco filters their are two that fit the cav filter but only one that lets fuel through! All the auto shops tried selling me the wrong one while I was away. You can tell the difference as the correct one has holes in the bottom of the filter. Apparently there are different configurations for the cav filters??

Hi Guys,
Hope you can assist, I have recently (saturday) installed a Delphi unit with the CAV 296 filter upstream of the standard Nissan affair on the 3 lt GU Patrol.
The trouble is I cannot get the primer to prime fuel up to the original filter(now a secondary filter). I have oiled all the surfaces double checked all the connections and checked all drain and bleed points and pondered my navel for several hours as good measure until late, last night.
Is your set up post the factory set up, and is this better??? Should it matter???
Any suggestions would be appreciated, oh look, I'm not an idiot and it has me baffled,
I must admit I was bit dubious at first at bolting it up really tight(the glass bowl) but after failure to get it primed reverted to the locking multi grips and did it up really tight.

Shouldn't need multi-grips, but yes, it must be air tight.
Have you removed the outlet hose on the original filter outlet (the hose that goes to the injector pump) whilst you were trying to prime it up? You MUST do that and hold a small container under the outlet while you pump the hand plunger until diesel starts to come out.

Sorry, also meant to say that it is best (IMHO) to mount the filter before the original filter. So you should have removed the inlet hose (the one closest to the firewall) and connected it to the inlet of the new filter set-up, then connect a hose from the outlet of the new filter to the original inlet.

Thanks Roachie for the advice, the Nissan guys said there was no need to undo the pressure side as the plunger serves as a bleed screw as
well. Will try that and let you know.
