Just been looking at SD cards for use in the Nuvi.

Site Link

Does anybody know of any reason why the product shown in the ebay ad' for $42- + $11- postage is so much cheaper than

Site Link

@ $129- plus $? postage.

They seem to be the same brand.

Cheers

They might be Chinese copy's as the item location is a fairly good give away.

Cards like these are pretty much a commodity nowadays and there is little to go wrong with them. They MIGHT be a generic knockoff of the real SanDisk ones but then they might also be a good deal having bought bulk as opposed to the other site that only sells a few as accessories to people who can't be bothered looking for better prices.

I would look in Dick Smiths, Tandy's or Officeworks first. I am actually wanting one for mine so will have a look tomorrow at Officeworks and if they are cheap I can give you a bell.

Cheers

Hi Muddy doe, there's a place on Morphett St Adelaide called MSY Computers, they have the 2gb SD cards for $31. they don't sell the 4gb cards at all.

The cheapest place in town for PC gear

Hi Roachie

There will be no reason not to get $42+ version , thats a typical price difference in that filed considering the slow moving source.

You can buy better than $129 in Aus , mind you I think you might be better off with a couple of 2 gig cards for backup than a 4 gig.

Hi Bill, GpsOz has the 2Gb for $49 and 4GB for $89, these are commonly found in most Computer shops. IT Warehouse and Dick Smiths have them on special most times.
Make sure the 4GB will work in the Nuvi 660

I don't think the Nuvi range save Tracklog, thats only if you want to see where abouts you got lost. :-) lol

I found Dick Smiths SD cards far more expensive than those on e-bay. Bought a 512Mb card & reader from DS to see how these things work with my ageing laptop.
I then got a 4Gb card from E-bay, shipped from Canada, at less total cost than the 512mb card from DS.
Wanting still more storage I got an 8Gb card from the US, at only slightly more than the DS card was.
Both cards work fine, the 8Gb came with a free card reader (thumb drive style) and stores nearly all my electronic maps (the 4 gig holds the rest), freeing up much space from the 20 gig lappy harddrive.
I bought the cards 'buy now', I do not like the bidding process and am happy with what I got.
Somebody mentioned that one cannot fill the cards completely which I also found to be true. I think it has something to do with the indexing of the data. But what is a few megabytes short of 8 gig, its nowhere near as bad as some would say.

Roachie,
just make sure your Nuvi supports SDHC as in 4GB card in your site link.
HC [high capacity] is a different format to standard SD cards not recognised by a lot of gadgets.
nearly bought same card for PDA until informed about this.
Regards Box.

Hi Member No 1,
I had a similar problem with an SD card for a car stereo, it is all to do with creating a folder/s and not storing or trying to store files in the root directory, once I created a folder I did get close (a few Meg short) to 1Gig of mp3's on the cards I bought when I bought the stereo.
Hope this clears it up for some people, same would apply with photos, storing in the root directory has limited indexing thus the 500 odd Mb limit.

As others have warned. Make sure your device can use a 4GB SD HC card!
I purchased the same card complete with a reader on the NZ equivalent of ebay.
www.trademe.co.nz for only $45.

I own several recent model Cameras, PDAs, GPS, Media Players etc. None will recognise the card.
My only use for this is as a USB thumb drive.
My advice - take it or leave it - stick to 2GB standard SD cards.

Hi all
All 2 Gb or less use the FAT16 file system. The 4 Gb or more use the FAT32 file system. The FAT16 will work in FAT 32 systems but not the other way around. So check your system b4 you buy 4gigs !!! Even latest NextG phones only have FAT 16 system.

In the past I found websites with good explanation about how to pick fakes and it also comments on capacity being overstated etc etc.

One site is:

G'day,
I found that graysonline.com.au is a good place to get them from at usually less than 1/2 retail price.

Worst delivery of any company last times I used them too. Lucky to get the items in three weeks. There have been a lot of things there at over retail price too, though I have occasionally found things to advantage.

In short, I have found ebay people better!

Nothing wrong with Sandisk, We have a couple of them, had more trouble out of a Fiji card ( original )

Go for it ,,,

By the way, those GPS's must be a good one, I remember you telling me about why you would stick to your little hand held one, over a Paul_Type_PDA ...

Thanks everybody, for your advice. I have now bought one off ebay (2GB) for $25- plus $12- postage (ex- Honkers). The picture of it on ebay shows it has got the little indent in the base (which is one of the things that defines it as genuine, according to that site posted above). Time will tell whether it is a good one or not.

Cheers
