Emmmm... yes... and it's only 3.3 times the price and is locked to Garmin software and maps and doesn't run a Windows operating system so has no hope of running Ozi Explorer - otherwise looks like a good buy Doug.

I really like to know why you have to Windows and Ozi, and the Grmin is not Locked to Garmin Software, it wll run Tracks4Australia which n my opinio s better, all in one unit, Yep I had someone oncesay that Ozi does this and does that, and shows power lines, and fences and wind-pumps , I have Ozi, it sits in the drawer redundant, and If I do want it I can put it on the laptop with one f the Garmins connected , Mike have a look at the webpages I done for T4A and the Quest and tell me if this unit on Ebay can match it

I have both Oziexplorer on a PDA and Tracks4Australia (And shonky maps) on a Garmin GPS (GPSMap60CX). They are very different products with very different uses. There are many places I go where there is no mapping coverage in Tracks4Australia, but where I have good map coverage with Ozi.

Usually when in state forest areas I am down onto 1:25000 maps in Ozi following tracks that are not on the Tracks4Australia set. For Oziexplorer I normally have 1:25000, 1:100 000 and 1:250 000 (Ausligs) as well as specality maps like hema, meridian or rooftop maps loaded. (And occasionally others like geo or vegetation maps).

I do agree that Tracks4Australia is very good for general touring but it is not for everyone. Also, I would suggest anyone using Tracks4Australia should also have a look at shonkymaps (Do a google search).

What is it about this shonkymaps fad, just the name "shonky" tells me enough, Do a google search.....Google is not the only search engine on the internet, Yahoo and Alta Vista are just as good,
What I would like to know is what's so fantastic about shonkymaps, is it hat you get it for free, Free maps don't as far as I'm concerned have the same quality as one I have paid the top money for ,

Shonkymaps are based on the same Auslig data set as the tracks4australia. However, different mapping data layers have been added to the mapping product to make it more useful (IMHO) than tracks4australia. If you have access to products like mapinfo you can down load the data from Auslig and produce your own maps with different layers as required.

The name "Shonkymaps" is a joke because the nickname of the author on the site that released the maps is "Shonky" because the Author put the maps together quickly and not with what he considered a professional level of cartography. However, they are still very good and in some ways better (IMHO) than the other free alternative tracks4australia. If you are unfamiliar with the concept of humour then I would refer you to the wikapedia we site for more information.

As for me suggesting people use Google rather then one of the other search engines out there, google was suggested as that is the engine most people use and are familiar with these days.

Obviously a computer and internet expert like yourself is familiar with other search engines which have other various advantages and disadvantages compared with Google. I would refer the reader to the Lucene project on sourceforge ( lucene.apache.org/java/docs/ ) if they want more information on the architecture and internals of internet search engines. However, this discussion is irrelevant to this thread and I expect most users could not give a stuff and just use google.

As for you taking issue with my comment "Usually when in state forest areas I am down onto 1:25000 maps in Ozi following tracks that are not on the Tracks4Australia set" and then stating "I think your telling a Furphy, in other words ...BS", I do not understand what your problem is. All I am saying it that when in state forests (And other areas) I use maps that have more (and different) detail available than tracks for Australia. That is why cartographers have produced maps with different scales and contents for the last couple of thousand years.

I also understand that using Oziexporer on a PDA does require some knowledge of computer usage, and that it can be a frustrating exercise for people without experienced in using them as they can be less than unreliable. Hence a dedicated device like a garmin (or other) GPS device can be easier to use. Interestingly there is some very nice 1:25 000 mapping available for the Garmins in the US market ( for a price :( ), but I have not seen any available in Australia. Also Magellan in Australia as a deal with Hema maps that has resulted in some of the hema cartography being available on the Magellan GPS units (Again for a price).

At the end of the day people need to evaluate their individual requirements and purchase the appropriate products to suit those requirements based on their evaluation of what is available on the market at the time. That is why people post questions on forums like this, and why people with differing experiences reply.

Finally we all have a equally valuable opinions on all of these topics based on our various experiences and that they are generally not "BS" as you so colourfully put it.

You make a good point , ok, I hav Ozi, I have Raster, Garmin, and T4A, I have decided that I do not need any better than what I have , My outback excursions are not Military like exercises therefore Mapsource and T4A in one compact unit ie Nui 660 is more than adequate,I have been around the forests out f Perth and find all the tracks I were on are in either Mapsource or T4A

Just like virtually every other map I have. Including my marine charts which all have a "Not To Be Used For Navigation" warning - go figure!

Garmin City Navigator Australia v7 eula in part:
"5. LIMITATION OF WARRANTIES AND LIABILITY: THE PRODUCT IS PROVIDED ON AN "AS IS" BASIS, WITHOUT ANY WARRANTIES OR CONDITIONS, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, ANY IMPLIED WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, OR ANY WARRANTY ARISING BY LAW, STATUTE, USAGE OF TRADE, OR COURSE OF DEALING. and several more paragraphs..

Tracks3Australia v1.21 eula in part:
"1. While every care is taken neither Graham Bowring nor Tracks4Australia accepts any responsibility resulting from the use of this mapset, including damage to the users GPS or computer or any other damage, either direct or indirect, regardless of any negligence or error by Graham Bowring or Track4Australia"
and several more paragraphs.

Shonkymaps - absolutely brilliant for the price. Grab them while you can.

Mike, I doubt if you will run Ozi Exlorer with any of the dedicated GPS Navigators.

You would be better with a Pocket PC style like the Mitac Mio P350 for around $275.00, it also has Samsung 400 processor & Sirf Star III embedded GPS, but unlike the GPS/Navigators it uses Windows Mobile 5.

Hi Shaker

I'm not certain if I can run Ozi on it either (hence my question) but it does use Win CE 4.2 as an OS and accepts SD (or CF or something :) cards so providing they haven't disabled the ability to run other software (which would be a strange thing to do!) it has the capability.

I've looked at the 3.5" stuff but because my eyes are wearing out with age (I need reading glasses) it would be a pain having to constantly put my glasses on to see the screen and because when I have them on I can't see more than 20 yards I'd probably end up hitting a tree :) So I'm hanging out for the next generation of in-car GPS'

Mike, the problem will be that you won't be able to get to a Windows "desktop" to be able add any other software.

Mike,

Don't know about the unit, but you think they could have come up with a better movie title than 'Lost' to demonstrate its capabilities.

Matt.
