Alpaca i repled to the same question a few weeks ago so look back ,what we use works
well and have got many people on to it.
Also as Michellle said anti histamines work
well but be carefull they can make you very sleepy. My wife takes the kids one and sleeps all day and still feels sleepy the next day.
All the best

Eric,
my wife was a doctor,(now retired) and read your post- does your wife still get tired?? She said your wife should experiment with different antihistamines as there's probably one which will not affect her like that- everybody's different. One that works
well with you may
well be hopeless for your wife- and possibly visa versa.
I find antihistamines don't make me even a tiny bit sleepy, but then again some don't seem to do a damn thing- I have serious allergys to bees and cats to name a few. But as I said everybody is different.....
Cheers

David,
thankyou for that advice, I have only ever tried Poloramine (kids & adult strength) with disasterous effects. I guess if I'm knocked out the bites dont worry me! However I will try another type in future.
thanks again

Alpaca, I was bitten terribly (and repeatedly) by sand flies in the month of August at
Bathurst Bay about 5 years ago. It was so severe that I had to douse (sp?) the bites (all over my legs) with straight metho and lay a damp facecloth over the affected area and then sit with cold air blowing across the wet facecloth from the vehicle's air-conditioner. For days I couldn't stand to be away from the relief this method of soothing the bites gave me. I went to see a doctor in
Weipa and he explained that by scratching I was bringing the histemine to the surface which made me want to scratch. The antihistemines reduce the histemine in your blood stream giving you a chance to stop the scratching cycle. Since then I have learned how to deal with sand flies - if you are prone to scratching, or are "alergic" to bites, then take antihistemines in ADVANCE. The doctor in
Weipa actually advised travellers to the Cape take them a few days in advance of visiting tropical areas and to continue taking them each day. So - do that!!! It's my method of defence now. I will never endure the pain and torment that I went through at
Bathurst Bay again!ExplorOz

I WAS going up the Cape but my knee replacement has come up first so this winter I will stay around South Oz on short trips.
I use Avon Bug Guard. Find it very good. Luckily Sand flies do not worry me and I do not get hives from them.
If you want to repel Marsh Flies(commonly misnamed as March Flies) then DO NOT wear anything BLUE out bush. The Marsh flies are attracted by the BLUE colour and hone in on you.
Happy travels.Cheers, Willem

At present the sand flies arnt to bad in
Weipa, Early morning before sun up and just after sunset are the worst times.
Up the Pine River the other day and they were pretty savage on sunset, we just use the spray on areoguard and it works fine.
Dengy fever is around at the moment so all you visitors to the Cape take care, the barra are on as
well.
