Looking at replacing
the springs on our 2007 Patrol diesel to give a bit more body clearance. Has steel bull bar and winch and Polyair bags on the rear.
Would like feedback from people who have done "the lift". I am leaning to King springs and Koni variable shocks but have just been told they are cheap and do not last. Other options are OME (had them on the Prado just sold) and not that impressed, made the vehicle roll noticably. Peders are another option but have heard nothing about them. Just done the
Canning Stock Route and Calvert Ranges in company with a couple of other Nissans that were running Kings and they were happy with them.
Anyone care to comment ? ?
I realsise it may be a bit like the Nissan v Toyota choice but interested in negative experiences as
well.
ps.Looking to get the mod done in
Perth this week before returning to
Darwin via Karajini

Fow what it's worth I have had Ironman on the patrol for 6 months (3 inch lift) and the setup has been good. I was expecting more roll with the increased height but it has been fine. They got their first real workout in the flinders a few weeks ago and went
well, flexed enough to keep the
wheels on the ground.

For the record...................Koni's are just about as good as they bet. (not cheap and will last and are rebuildable) I have not had kings before but i always thought they were a top product too.

I have King springs and Bilstein shockies and they have been fine over the 18 months that I have had the Patrol.

Old Man Emu by ARB. Coils, Nitrochargers with 2" lift. Ride is slightly harsher as I got the heavy load pack but it does have less body roll. Never had them lock up on corrugations and nothing but a satisfied customer. I have had them for 65,000km/3 years on my GU 2.8.

I doubt you will do better than that combination. Kings have a progressive rate coil specifically designed for the GU. Just make sure if you go this way, you go to someone who is very familiar with the King/Koni products, so they fit up the correct combination of springs and shocks. They will more than likey cost more than any of the other combinations, but IMO worth the extra, considering what we ask these components to put up with.
One of my mates has this on his Patrol and raves about it. I have it on my 105 and find it excellent. I went for the biggest shock I could fit ... the Koni Raid 90 series adjustables. Heres my first attempt at posting pics....
Remember this is just my .02. There will be as many opinions on
suspension as there are people on the
forum.
Cheers,
Mark

Thanks for the info. Talked with spring people here in
Perth and they say to fit fixed rate on the front and progressive rate on the rear. We also tow a Jayco Pop top van.

GT,
Yep, that's normal. Even with the fixed rate springs on the 105, I still find them excellent. They didn't have progressives for the rears of the Toyota at the time.

Mark

GeeTee,
Mate, wrt
suspension in
Perth give Wilkinsons
Suspension a call, they are in Cannington and Top Notch? IMHO, you won't find better than Koni but there are various series within the Koni and IMHO the 88 series it a great combination with King Springs. They are about $300ish a corner but worth every cent IMO.
Suspension brands, types of ride etc are all subjective because we all have enjoy different types of rides and have different expectations out of our
suspension system.....If you have several mates or people you know with varied
suspension set-ups then see if you can go for a ride in their truck to see what you enjoy and what will work for you......IMO, for what it's worth KONI 88 series are about the best shocks around though many may think different?
IMHO, 2in lift is perfect unless you really wish to play serious and hard, it is a good compromise between road handling and bush touring. Now wrt castor correct, yes you may not need it for a 2in lift but IMO it is better to try and restore the vehicle to its factory set up as the geometry has changed (or as close to it). Generally for every 1in of lift you will lose approximatly 2 deg of castor. So for a 2 in lift your castor will be effected by approx. 4 deg. The Patrol generally comes out standard with between 5-6 degree of positive castor so after a two inch lift you may only have 1-2 degree of positive castor. This can affect your handling, castor wander. For what it is worth I have fitted a 3 degree castor correct to a 2in lift to get my castor as close back to factory as possible (castor plates not needed for small lift).
Hope this helps in some way.....

Hi Teabag,
Thanks for confirming what I have decided. Been in touch with Wilkinsons already this morning and booked in for Thursday for King/Koni 2" lift.
Will talk to them about the castor setup.

No worries mate. What series KONI are you going? I think 82 series is there basic which is still very good. I would pay the little extra for the 88 series. I had them on my 2000 model Patrol and am now regreting not putting them on my current one. Silly me went the cheaper option......

Think the quote was for 82 series. May check and see the difference in price. Thanks for the info.
