I was wondering if many users on this site have had issues with more than just a "mist" of Diff oil exiting from the exhaust port of the actuating air solenoid?
A further question to the above, have any users had fitted a return line from the exhaust port to the axle housing?
My understanding is that the above situation will only happen if there are problems with the internal seals.
I am just trying to sort out if this is a common problem or that I am just unlucky.
Fortunately they (front & rear lockers) are still under warranty. Please avoid any litigious comments.
My vehicle is a 1997, 80 series Cruiser.
Thanks in advance.

Tony,
I've had
mine fitted (F & R) on my 100 T/D for a couple of months - unrelated issue with a pinion shaft bearing but no leaks from the Diff locks.
Done by a local ARB supplier.

You are not alone mate....
mine has been doing that for a very long time. I spoke to the guys at ARB about 6 months ago and said if you are really worried get a one way line put in or something like that but he said that it's the seals that go. I was quoted about $150 to service and fix em up but I am not to worried about it.

Thanks Tim & Troll.
The one way line is probably what I am referring to when I mention a return line back to the axle housing. I had this fitted to the front axle housing about 2 months after the lockers were first installed. Cost me $110.00. With the lockers now 15 months old, I am getting more than a bit of oil coming out of the rear solenoid exhaust port and the compressor cycles every 3 to 4 minutes. In my mind I am wondering if the installer was a bit rough with the seals? The cruiser is going in tomorrow for an appraisal.

"one way line" I think they call it a purge valve

Hi Tony. I had the problems you described and it was reduced by the installation of the return line. However recently I have noticed the compressor is cycling more regularly so I'll have to pay close attention again. Cheers.

Have Front and rear lockers in the Troopy and give them a solid work out - no problems.
I have a problem with the master power on/off switch (not the locker activation switches) with the activating rocker face breaking the plastic rocker pivots and the face subsequently falling out onto the floor.
Real bitch when that happens.
Thinking about trying to identify another switch that will do the job.

Mine ended up on the floor also, just when I needed it.
Blue tacked it on temporarily 18 months ago, it's still there and hasn't moved.

Interesting, I thought I was the only one with a crappy switch.
Mine broke the central plastic pin on the rocker top. I drilled the stump out and fitted a 4mm nylon screw instead. The protruding thread was contact glued into the rocker. It has worked for some time now.

Mine still too new to show anything like this, but I have read quite a few times that airlockers reqiured "resealing" each 18-24 month (mainly rear one, of course). Ultimatelly it required taking off diff from the vehicle. IMHO not a huge penalty - one can properly check all seals and bearing at the same time. Being incredibly paranoid I have installed
mine by myself. What I notice is rear one has O-rings while front one very siphisticated double-lips seals (they look heaps better to me). As far as I understand mechanics happening inside I would be much more worried about blocage of diff breathers rather then oil mist from solenoid.
Cheers.
PS I have 80 LC 1996

Tony ,
I have had the seals go and they were replaced . Apparently there is a new part which is meant to fix the problem .
I had the oil blow out problem and a hose was put on to take any blow out down to the chassis rail .
I just came back from a big trip and I do not think the diff locks were engaging . My car is going in for service next Tuesday , so I will find out then if they have died again .
I know nothing about mechanics , so I really cannot comment further .
Willie .

Do you have the solenoids mounted inside the vehicle?? If so- there is a kit for a few bucks that dumps the fumes outside. Just a tube with a few fittings.

Thanks to all those who have replied. The end result is that both diffs are to come out next week under warranty. I need to confirm if it will be a case of new seals or the whole center.
My real issue is: What is the oil doing in the air line anyway?
With the amount of oil coming out, a decent spray followed by an ooze (that became nearly constant on the front diff), the alternatives of running it into the chassis rail are and should not be an issue. The oil shouldn't be there. I suppose dumping the excess into the chassis rail would be an alternative to electronic rust proofing!
My compressor is mounted under the bonnet.
No issues with blocked diff breathers as the problem remained with the breather pipes off - I have extended breathers to the diffs, gearbox & transfer box.
And to Robin, last weekend saw only patchy snow on Mt.Margaret above 1000 metres, where as the weekend prior, there was good constant cover from around 800 metres. Still had some fun though.
26.5% sale on at Rays Gardenvale tomorrow. Does this mean that the 12 hour rating on a thermos will be reduced to 8.82 hours?
Thanks again, Tony.
