Can anyone help? I'm getting a 1989 Hilux ready for a roadworthy certificate, high beam won't work. When you turn on high beam the blue indicator on the dash lights up but no lights. Low beam is good. The high beam lights work when the stalk is pulled back so the sealed beams are working.

so if they are working when the stalk is back, the relay is fine, and all wiring. I would take the stalk out mate, and check the contact in there at the base. Get a test light and check for power to and from, and clean contacts with contact cleaner and emry paper.
Hope this helps.

Ok stupid Q have you checked the fuses? My next point of call would be the relay! There is usually two different relays for Pass (flashing Highbeam) and highbeam on the stalk.

Does your fuse box in the engine bay have a diagram showing the relays? Sorry been years (15) since I owned a Rollux so cant be more specific.

If you can track them done then get someone to switch between Hi and low and feel for the click. If you know how to use a Testlight then jump in there with that so you can ascertain if you have supply and switching circuits both working correctly.

At least you know its not the wiring down to the lights of anything painful like that.

Oh always a question I ask when you have elec probs...have you done anything weird just before they dropped out....water crossing, fitted radio, spotlights etc?

All the best, Matt.

This is well known with the old Hilux. It will be the switch in the steering column mate. Been there, done that.

Thanks for the replies, I pulled the stalk assembly apart, squirted a bit of contact cleaner in the right place put it together and everything worked fine.
