Evening all

I promised a member a day or two ago that I would post some pics of the PDA mount setup in the Troopy, so here they are if you are interested

The mount arm is screwed to the A pillar.

The mount itself is a powered IPAQ compatible setup which has a changeable compatibility socket in the bottom of it. Ie other PDA’s can use the mount if you obtain the correct bridging socket at time of purchase.

I purchased it from Johnny Appleseed and it comes with a flexible arm/suction cup for the windscreen.

I cut that arm off and then custom modified it to take the mount arm that you see, so all warranty is gone like the brides nightie.

I then custom made the anti vibration strut that is fixed to the bottom of the mount arm, which in turn is subsequently attached to the dash at the edge of the instrument panel via self adhesive – double sided Velcro.

End result. – a rock solid PDA mount with no vibration what so ever that is exactly where I want it and should there be any queries re same from the genedarmes, then it can either be removed extremely easily or folded in along the A pillar out of the way. Whatever it is that the Law at the time requires, and then may be restored to its rightful position in a jiffy later on when it suits.

G'day Lucy
Re: your PDA mounting !! Just come back from a Cape York trip, and we've had the PDA mounted (albeit not too secure) in the centre of the dash on the auxilliary fuel gauge binnacle. Like having it there so the navigator can read it too.
Anyhow, I was thinking it would be handy to have it mounted under the overhead console- centred about a rear view mirror location. I would like to have it so it folds up when not being used, and possibly in 'landscape' orientation so's not to restrict vision.
Any ideas????
ps..it's a HZJ75 Troopy and the overhead console is the Outback 4WD radio/stowage thing

Unfortunately not.

Your suggestions do however bring back memories of the fold down gun sights that used to be mounted in the roofs of Helicopter gun-ships in Vietnam.

The pilots would just flip/fold them down and they would be right in front of their faces.

Extremely stable and as the pilots were locked in with all points harness like todays racing cars and 4WD comp cars there was very little likely hood of them being projected forward into the sight frame, unless of course there happened to be an uncontrolled landing.

The setup I use could be adapted for you purpose very easily, however I can't think where you would put the anti-vibration strut.

I am pretty sure you would need one, because even though its minimal vibration, it makes things a tad difficult to see when the vehicle is in motion over rough ground.

Plus of course if you happen to get catapulted around in the drivers seat, you may end up wearing it in the face or head.

I know if I moved mine up there and folded it up as you discussed it would be well and truly out of my line of vision.

I actually have a rear vision mirror with a mini computer screen incorporated in it
that connects to the laptop which I tried with Chit results.

The resolutiuon was dreadful and you couldn't see it in daylight, plus the constant having to look up and away drove me to distraction.

If your SWMBO requires one you may have toget two (LOL)

Also how are you going to power it and connect it to GPS (More things to consider)

Thanks Mate
I'll keep doing a bit of head scratching.
I use a Holux CF plug in GPS receiver with external antenna into the iPaq.
Up near the mirror- can be mounted about 10" away from it- would be out of harms way.
Anyhow- have a good one
