what is the effect - good/bad of increasing the tyre size to a 33" tyre on a turbo diesel - towing? sand? mud? legalities?

I run 33” (285/75/16) on
mine, towing is no different but in sand and mud they give you more clearance and better traction depending on the pattern. The only pain is the speedo is 5% out but you get use to this, my 100TD is far more capable with these MTRs than it was with BFG AT 265/75/16. On the legal side they fit into the percentage increase allowable from the tyre placard size.

Which MTs did you find that fit within the 15mm rule? I have searched for months and have found none.
My 80 series has 2 tyre sizes on the placard - 275/70R16 and 7.50R16 (should be the same as yours I think). I have searched everywhere for the largest tyres available in either of these sizes and found that to be the Simex M/P Trekker in 7.50R16 with a diameter of 817.1mm. That means with the 15mm increase you can fit a tyre up to 832.1mm diameter - and the smallest 285/75 anywhere is 833mm which although only out by 0.9mm is still technically outside the allowed increase.
(The above calculation - largest 'legal size' tyre available then add 15mm to that - is the official way the RTA calculates whether a tyre meets the diameter increase rule, so I'm not sure where you get a "percentage" calculation from....)

I also run 285 75 R16 MTR's on 100TD. Same comments - no issues with the size / performance except for impact on speedo (GPS fixes this) and wallet through increased fuel consumption. Much metter off road.
Lost about 1 - 1.5 lt/100 km from original tyres to MTR's but no longer bother running 2 sets of rim/tyre combo's.

Steve L:Yes you are correct on 15mm increase, I thought it was a percentage, my tyre fitters are very careful about what they fit not to break the law maybe it is different in Vic.
Steve M: Do you increase your Klms travelled by 5% before you calc your fuel consumption this brings me back to much the same as pre 285/75/16

Yes I did adjust for the 5% but still worse comsumption - assumed tyres but maybe it's all the other gear in the 100 ....

I run BFG 285/75/16 muds on my vehicle which has a 2" lift. They will comply with the new DOTAR standard when it is ratified in NSW although the tyres are probably technically OK now that they are half worn.
The rear tyres do rub on the top of the mudguards at full articulation which I don't attain too often.
I don't tow, however have found the the muds great in all conditions when used at the correct pressure, including sand. A second set of rims with the old AT's are still sitting in my shed and I haven't used them since they were replaced with the muds.
I'm suprised how quiet the muds are.

The RTA use the manufacturers quoted OD when determining the legality of tyres - so it makes no difference if they are half worn unfortunately.
I'm awaiting written confirmation from the RTA Technical manager that my 305/70R16s are legal (he's verbally given it to me already) as - although they exceed the current 15mm rule - they are within the new NCOP/DOTAR rules and he advised that he was happy to use the new rules even before ratification as the delay is an administrative one rather than a safety one (i.e. the RTA is happy with ahh the details in the NCOP and are not trying to change anything...).

I have a set of alloys with the BFG ATs and keep thinking I will put them back on for summer but never get around to it, I am on my second set of Muds and find they are great for all conditions and as you say quiet enough, I will just sell the ATs

finished up with the BFG 285/70/17 mud terrain, a 33" tyre up from the 31" grandtreks. will give some feedback on this thread with how they go. So far, not as noisy as expected - can hear the tyres but only just over the diesel -about the same as I remember the BFG A/t on a petrol - though they apparantly get noisier with age. Fuel economy around town has moved from 10.0 - 10.5 - probably just he speedo inaccuracy which is 100 reads 95. handling is fine - hardly any difference from standard - braking no difference, acceleration seems no different - though have yet to hitch up the bushtracker. The tyres fit the car
well - look like they belong - not large like 33"'s on a hilux.Ride height with a 2" lift is now 2.05 up from 1.98 - never risked the 2.0 carparks anyway so still 2.1 is go. Was a bit nervous about trying the 33" but much ado about nothing so far.

took to a
soft beach yesterday fully loaded with boat on the roof, these tyres have transformed the car! - Thought muddies were supposed to be worse on sand? - must be the extra diameter - at 17 pounds pressure I walked over the usual challenges at snail pace where the 31" grandtreks at the same pressure would stop me without a good run up. For reference I run in low range, centre and rear locker engaged.
