Hi Guy's,
I have a GQ Patrol 4.2 litre petrol with a carbie. I am keen to through away the points and install an electronic system. I have tried various places to buy a conversion kit with out any luck. Can someone please advise what is available and where I would be able to buy an conversion kit? Also do you have to change the coil and or spark plugs when fitting a electronic system? I live in the Perth metro area but I am happy to buy from inter state.
thanks Geoff

Just discovered that the ignition dude I have used in the past to convert two distibutors to electronic ignition used Piranha Electronic Ignitions alright but he didn't get them from Piranha 4x4 in Scorseby Road Bayswater, Vic.

This is where the business was:

Ignition Torque.
38 Taylors Rd Croydon VIC 3136.
p: (03) 97256308

This is where the business is now according to the White pages

Ignition Torque
Fcty 8/ 78 Bayfield Rd Bayswater 3153
(03) 9720 6308

Same phone number

And a young guy called Jerry Soldatos owned it last time I was there a few years ago.

No web page.

Chit I feel like a 'Roachie' after giving you that bum steer (LOL)

I am positive that if anyone can help you, then its that Jerry dude.

He was into dragsters etc and is a real whizz in the distributor/ignition side of life.

Hey Geoff, i just sold my Dual fuel GQ, so i'll give you my experience. I had a Ignitor electronic ignition kit installed. My mechanic recommended it and did the job (Approx $300) The car did over 60 000kms without ever needing a tune and i sold it this week still going strong. Some kits require a new coil however this one i had just used the standard one although i had earlier changed over to a Bosch GT-40.
As for leads you should be running 9mm spiral core type. Top Gun and Bosch are both good brands. And spark plugs were just the ones recommended to me by my mechanic. Both plugs and leads i had replaced before the electronic ingition was installed so i didn't change them however if you were still running standards i would be changing them.
Just do it...............you'll never look back.

Geoff,

Have a look at a product called Pertronix Ignitor which is a simple electronic replacement of the points mechanism. If you do a google search of this product you will get all the info you need. I know they are available for the GQ and from memory cost about $250. Very simple to fit.

Steve.

Kev this is a good system but you still need to get a distributor that has the hall effect arrangement in it to do away with the kettering system which was the bane of all ignition systems.....I actually machined up a cup bizzo with slots in it and triggered the ignition with one of these photo interrupters: Site Link
It was in a 72 Corolla and went for years without needing tune ups.

Kev

Thats what that Gerry guy that I mentioned above does as well.

He also used to do something called 're-curving' (I think thats what it was called) what ever that was.
