Hey Geoff, i just sold my Dual fuel GQ, so i'll give you my experience. I had a Ignitor electronic ignition kit installed. My mechanic recommended it and did the job (Approx $300) The car did over 60 000kms without ever needing a tune and i sold it this week still going strong. Some kits require a new coil however this one i had just used the standard one although i had earlier changed over to a Bosch GT-40.
As for leads you should be running 9mm spiral core type. Top Gun and Bosch are both good brands. And spark plugs were just the ones recommended to me by my mechanic. Both plugs and leads i had replaced before the electronic ingition was installed so i didn't change them however if you were still running standards i would be changing them.
Just do it...............you'll never look back.

Have a look at a product called Pertronix Ignitor which is a simple electronic replacement of the points mechanism. If you do a google search of this product you will get all the info you need. I know they are available for the GQ and from memory cost about $250. Very simple to fit.
