Good Aye All,
I have a 4.2lt diesel Patrol GQ non turbo and its Automatic 1990 3 speed with power switch/ overdrive button. Question is do I turn off the overdrive all the time when I'm towing or just going up hills and when there is a head wind etc. I notice that it revs quite high with it off.
Regards George

What weight are you towing? I always towed with
mine with the o/d on which was against what everyone usually says...........however my camper only weighs about 800kgs loaded.(
mine was a petrol/gas GQ, now have a manual diesel) The ideal solution is to install locker on the transmission which allows you to manually locl and unlock the torque convertor. This will allow you to tow in o/d without the torque convertor locking. However on the flat roads i really would just let in engage.

Hi George,
Automatics don’t suffer the weak 5th gear problems that many manuals do, but they do suffer from excessive heat if overloaded and worked too hard. Locking the torque converter as soon as possible does help to keep it cool as
well as fitting a large aftermarket cooler, so if it can be kept cooled enough, towing in O/D shouldn’t be a problem.
Heavy duty shift kits and manual converter locking systems are a big help for towing and transmission life.

George, I also 'suggest' that towing in overdrive is not a problem, 'if' the transmission is in good condition and the transmission change set points are correct.
I also will 'strongly' recommend you go to a "qualified" Auto transmission specialist and have a larger capacity or better still an 'extra' transmission oil cooler fitted, as the transmission has to work much harder when towing, particularly when travelling at slower speeds than highway traffic allows, as on narrow bush or dirt roads and the added heat will kill the oil seals by burning the protection out of the fluid.
I've used a diesel powered, auto trans with O/D now for many years and you learn by experience!
