I have a 1990 hilux , with the original spare winder chain, it is very clunky and difficult to use , is there anything available to replace it, besides putting on a swinging spare holder?

Gibbo,
I had a 2000 SR5 Hilux a few years ago. It started off with a cable winder which was smooth to use. This then became a recall as there were too many (don't know how many though) spare tyres being found on rough roads when the cable broke. The recall replaced the wire winder with a chain one. It was notchy to wind in and out - but better than having no spare there when needed.
It seemed that the notchy feel also had to do with dirt and grime on the chain and winder. Might pay to lower the tyre ocassionally and give it a blast with the hose or pressure washer and then some CR-C or WD-40. Better than losing a tyre IMHO.

Lower the wheel every so often and clean it... but how many times would you need to use the spare? Skinned knuckles, swearing and sweat are all part of the tyre changing experience!

Yes , I might have to get under and clean it, I guessed the clunkiness was to ensure the chain didn't unravel.
By the way I have had 6 punctures in 2 years, so I do use the winder often!
