Buying a GPS

Gday,
I've done a search on GPSs and are starting to come to the conclusion that a Garmin is probably the way to go?
Harvey Norman have a few in their catalogue and I'm curious to see what people think of them.
The models they have to choose from are.....
Street Pilot C510
NUVI 660 GPS Navigator

They also have
Navman F20 / F40 /N401 GPS+partner pack
TomTom one / one xl
Digi Walker M10 C520

I mainly want it for a trip to WA but it will also be used in hot dusty conditions around Alice Springs, and are curious if any of them are any good in a boat?

Cheers

Ive got a Magellan explorist 300 myself, im looking for something a bit more up to date and user friendly...one that talks to you.

Re the actual purchase, once you decide on models - check GPS Oz on line, as mentioned above - great service for my few GPS related purchases - pricing is good (you might save over local shops), and delivery was reliable.

Also try the EO shop online and www.ja-gps.com.au Johnny Appleseed are pretty good too, GPS Oz are excellent also, have dealt with both and they both offer great service, and advice on use of the units, also thinking that we should arrange an EO GPS discussion night and talk about the things, show what they can do etc.

Might do that when I get back from OS.

I have a Garmin and find them quite intuitive to use. I havent used wither of the units you are considering though, I would check to see what u want to use it for, if its travel on roads only, or offroad travel also. GPS's areant all the same in that regard

Great Idea Bonz, a gps discussion night. I could ask the J.A blokes if they would participate. Went to a J.A training day and they were really good, didn't push their own barrow, just gave the facts. Let me know when you want to get the ball rolling and if you need any help. (No link to J.A, just a satisfied customer).

I am back from Canada on 10 September and will make some arrangements then, maybe one night when I am in Melbourne I might be ablke to secure a big room in the City of Melbourne for no cost for a few hours.

I will put up a post when I get back, if I remember :)

I have just bought a Nuvi660 and despite being a total dip-stick when it comes to anything technical, I was able to turn it on and start using it without even looking at any instructions.
It comes standard with street navigation, but also has a SD card slot which can be used to load other maps/tracks etc. I am awaiting the arrival of a 2GB SD card, so I can get Muddy Doh to load up all the (free) Shonkymaps for me. These maps apparently cover all of Australia and should suit my needs perfectly.

Cheers

Yeh, that's a reasonable price I would say. I got mine off ebay for $840 + $20- postage (from Melbourne). Great service: auction finished last thursday week and I rec'd the Nuvi here in SA the following Monday. I'm rapt in the touch screen......soooo easy to understand and if you make a blue, there is a "BACK" button.

Apparently it has some limitations, like no breadcrumb trail (I think that's what Muddy said?...hahah), but stuff like that doesn't bother me.......I can't imagine getting myself so lost that I could back-track the way I went without looking at a screen....

You need the blue water map for boating, most come preloaded with streetmap only. Whadya want one for the boat? Is the Todd flowing :)
I have a garmin Quest. Small screen but very good, and its portable. Whens your WA trip, Will be out there in a coupla weeks, and you can borrow it to evaluate it if you want.

Hi Hairy

660 is great if your after a navigator , but if your after a GPS I'd make sure your aware of the Garmin 276c.

If you do any exploring type stuff you must have the ability to be able to re-trace your steps back by following your plotted trail.
You really can lose you way in only a few hundred meters in many of the enviroments I've encountered around this land.

Just had a look at the Crossover GPS, nice marketing ploy using the name Crossover , I just was reading how it shows topo mapping with 4WD trails, outback tracks with, and marine charts , well Garmin [GPS Map 176C discontinued ] and the GPS Map 276C have been doing that for yonks , Nothing new in that at all , in fact I could have Marine maps in my Garmin Quest if I were into Boating and Fishing, but if i were I would get a unit more designed for Boating/Fishing as depicted on this website www.ja-gps.com.au/garmin_larger.html

Guys just remember many navigator units will not work "off road". They just tell you to go to the nearest road. Even if you are in a CP. So for anyone going bush they are totally useless. Apart from PDA's which are useless in the sun many units don't accept any extra charting.
I have used many units and worked for one mob who sold these things and would recommend the Nuvi as the best of whats available. ( And thats not the mob I worked for)
They are all 90% good and 10% BAD. and its that 10% that cause you grief

on it's own , No

But you can download other maps to it like, Shonkymaps or T4A.
It also doesn't save your track log, otherwise it's a great GPS

WHAT..!!!! hey guy's they do work off road , just that they can't show you a road if your not on one and if your not on a road then you don't need guidance .....DO YOU, but it will give you Lat'/Long' , and it will if connected to the Laptop with Ozi maps show you where you are,
And if you have a Nuvi 300,310,660 with T4A and your on the French Line, QAA, WAA, Rig Road, it will be shown on the screen as a moving map with the cursor ,You really don't expect to have a female voice tell you how to get from Purnie Bore to Poeppel Corner do you , ......the Mrs will do that perfectly.

Gday Doug,
Im thinking of getting the Nuvi 660. Most of its use will be .....
1. Spotting something on Google earth, putting in the coordinates and using it to find whatever it is we are going to.
2. Finding our way around Perth and up the West Coast at Christmas.
3.Quite often when canping we come across tracks that we dont know where they go or if its the one we should be on. If I can plot them when we are there and look on google earth when we get home or even better before we leave and have the info we need while were out there.

Some one said you cant back track with it (bread crumb ), I have an Explorist 300 that should do this if ever needed so that feature doesnt worry me a lot.( always follow your wheel tracks)

What do you think?
Cheers

What I was trying to say is the Nuvi will do all you say..........Many others wont. They will provide Lat'/Long' and on road. But bloody useless if you go bush.
Doug your spot on...........I just cant put it into words like you..........

Gday Flash32,
Shiittt Now Im confused!
You say "the Nuvi will do all you say" (Doug or Myself)
Because I do go bush ( usually tracks) sometimes no tracks and I dont want something that is useless once you get off the bitumen.
I was under the impression I could download ( or buy a disc ) a map of a specific area on a SD card and put it in the nuvi 660 and then use it for bush????

This is getting hard....I nearly had my mind made up..LOL

Hairy, the maps that come with Nuvi 660 is a auto routing and it mainly works on the black top and a few dirt roads, they will not work on the french line or the canning.
You can buy a 2gig SD card and put ShonkyMaps on it.
Once you turn off CityNav, shonkymaps will show you everything, including fences, mines, bores, trig points.
This will be in an Offroad mode
