Hi all, im currently in Japan on a extended business trip and I’ve picked up a 1992 80 series turbo diesel, 130000 on the clock, Yes it has all the bells and whistles and I got it for $12000 AUS, All is good and solid, I had Miyagi Toyota run a check and it came back with a clean bill of health, I was a bit surprised at this because at night I can see a whitish smoke floating around the back of the car and when I take off, I feel like the bat mobile, if I stab the accelerator a few times in neutral when I am stationary it stops and when I’m motoring along there is no smoke, I can only see it at night.
I guess some would say the fuel injection pump is wound up a tad too much and I’m over fuelling and the injectors need a clean out, advice from the boys at ARB, thanks.
But some would say the turbo, but it smokes at idle?
I’m in Japan and the Yard I bought the car from will fix it but they are not sure what the problem is, or don’t want to know.
This is my first post here, I am a west Aus boy, and had a troopie before i headed here, I took it everywhere and miss Aus so much, I hope I have posted this in the right place and I look forward to hearing any comments, cheers adam

I wouldn't get too concerned as they smoke a bit when you boot them or are pushing hard up hills.
Night time isn't the best time to check for smoke as it shows up in the lights but may be nearly impossible to see in daylight.
Are you bringing it back to OZ? if so might be worth getting it looked at when you get home.

Adam,

Another good site if you are arfter specific 80 Series info is www.offroad80s.com - it's an Australian site and someone there may also help you.

IMHO - I have always been advised that if there is white smoke from a turbo (diesel) it usually means that there is an issue with the turbo - in that oil may be leaking into it etc but this should occur all the time. Maybe what you are seeing is condensation if it is only at night.

thanks for the link Karl, yes the smoke isnt all the time, maybe it is the turbo though, because when i came to a stop I rev the motor twice and the smoke stops, maybe it burns that oil away when i do that, well next week it will go in for a injection clean and a turbo check , thank god im not paying.. thanks for the reply..

Adam,

It might be a very small oil leak with the oil pooling whilst you are at idle.

Goo didea to have the injectors service and tuned (that is rest set so they are working properly and spraying the diesel in a fine mist and not squirting it in), also have them do your fuel pump at the same time as the pump and injectors go hand in hand.

These are the first areas that someone with a diesel should look at when wanting more power.

When they do your turbo have them check its boost setting - you don't want it to be too high. The average setting for daily driving should be around the 9lb (sorry about the imperial measurment) and no more than 12lb.

Hope this helps and all works out for you.

Hi Karl, Sorry, where would the oil be pooling? It stops smoking when I rev the motor a few times.

PS thanks for the link to the other site and the Welcome.

Adam,

I am not exactly sure but I have been informed by my mechanic that oil can pool in the bottom of the housing where the tubine fans are - sorry I can not be more specific - I am mechanically technically handicapped :-)))

As it is not blowing smoke constantly I don't think it can be to great of a problem - yet, so it is good that you are getting your mechs to check it out.

Admamjapan,
It's usually black smoke if the fuel pump is over fuelling. Blue (white?) is burnt lubricating oil and on startup usually indicates that your valve stem seals are worm. The requires the head to be removed. While you are at it you normally recondition the whole head. Bit unusal at 130ks though providing you can belive it. I would be getting the work done by the supplier for nothing rather than spending the money back over here.
Cheers,

is there much opportunity (land) to go 4bying in over there? Another five years for a West Aussie, ooooh not me thanks.

Hope it all gets sorted, could be burning oil, Bilbo would know with his diesel experience.
