Hi again,

Just an update on Links and Images. I have been doing some work to standardise the links and images, this has caused some of the orginal methods to stop working - these are the copy and paste versions where you just paste the link into the thread directly. I can arrange to add these again however it does involve a fair bit of stuffing around.

As a compensation I have added the Insert Link and Insert Image tools to help you format links and images. You will notice that the image format follows the standard forum format support as per places like photobucket. So for these site you can just copy the forum format and paste it striaght into the thread, it should work perfectly (if not please let me know, as this is one of the main reasons for the change).

Also please use the preview option before you submit that way you will know if your links and images are going to work before you submit. Clicking on links in preview mode will not effect the submission as it will force a new window to open to test the link.

I hope these updates are helpful and make using the system easier.

Don't make it to easy for the visitors David, as they will never sign up as members ;))

They don't get the gallery which is the easiest way to link images in the system. Nor do they get Advertisment Suppress, Thread Watch, updates since last visit and a whole heap of other things. Anyway it is a choice for all.

Quit right!

In fact I think you should ban all visitors and restrict the forum (and site even) strictly to members!

Hi David,

YOu might like to look at these issues:

You used to resize images for display - I think you need to do that still.

Also, when you have a wider image, the text on wider screens stretches out over the ads at right.

Cheers
Andrew.

Ah you may notice that I have started working on this and I did update your previous thread 48519. It is not fully automatic yet but give me some time and I will sort it. I have written a mod and it involves changing the img and /img things to wimg and /wimg - the w indicates wide. If you preview and notice this you can manually change it for now - this is the bit I am trying to work out the automation for.

Mmmm, my favourite (well only) way to insert a link was by copy and paste. That's gone.
If I do the 'insert link' thing, I still can't copy and paste. Seems I have to type the link in full, no matter what. Is that right?

If so, I don't think I'll be giving links as much in future. Google it might become a common response. Some links are very long and tedious.

Is it the same for images? I can't copy and paste an image URL any more?

If no copy and paste on either links or images, I can't see any upside in this change yet (for members). Perhaps I just need a better idiots guide?

Sorry to sound negative David, but on the limited info I have, that's how I see it.

Copy and Paste - I use it all the time, what do you mean it does not work? I just used it above in my reply to Andrew.

Norm,

In relation to copy and paste try to copy a hyperllink and then open up the Insert Link box and the use the right mouse button in the URL Address field and select paste. I guess your query may have been because of the lack of a Paste icon in the window - is this correct? I think I can add one of these to the screen to make it easier.

As I said David, perhaps I just need a better idiots guide.

In your original post you said:
'I have been doing some work to standardise the links and images, this has caused some of the orginal methods to stop working - these are the copy and paste versions where you just paste the link into the thread directly'.

I took this to mean we can no longer copy and paste a link to another web site or a URL to a picture.
I copied and pasted a link, then previewed it it did not come up as a link as it used to, which supported my interpretation of your statement. So without further testing, I posted my response.

So, I'll try again:
http://www.exploroz.com/Vehicle/Boats/Default.aspx

Well, I just previewed it and it did not come up as a link in the preview. So I'll post it and see. Perhaps it works on posting, but not on preview.

If not and there is a simple way for me to copy and post a link, please provide the 'idiots guide'. I clearly need it.

' I guess your query may have been because of the lack of a Paste icon in the window - is this correct? I think I can add one of these to the screen to make it easier.'

Yep. That's it. But now that you have given me the 'idiots guide' ie copy, go to inset link, right click and then paste, I have it.

I no longer need it, but for other computer illiterates who don't read or remember your response here, it might be handy to have a paste button on the insert link box or some other hint.
Thanks David,
Norm C

Hi David,

I have been trying to insert an image (scanned JPEG) into a follow-up thread without success. Clicking the insert image box gives a box with Windows internet explorer and HTTP at the start but I cannot paste the image (paste option visible but not available). Can you please explain what I need to do. I tried right mouse click (and left) as you suggested but no result.

Thanks John H

John, you need to set up a free account at something like Photobucket and have your image posted there so it is web accessible, rather than post an image on EO. It then appears where you post the link.

You can refer to any photo that is on the web though like this
which refers to the CEO of Wesfarmers in this article http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,22224275-643,00.html

You will see that you are expected to paste in the appropriate links. With my browser, if I right click on the pcture I get an option to save the link of the picture. I can paste in to the appropriate line after the [Insert Image/Link] box
