G'day Trendsetters.
After much thought and deliberation i have come a conclusion and purchased myself the above two items. This post is to thank the people that made my decision much easier and hopefully one day when the search function works better other newbie's may get some advice. If looking on the net at GPS try Members Doug and Dustys home page a lot of good info for the beginner not just on GPS.
The GPS decision on brand, for me was easy Garmin but what model, for city driving and a future trip around the block i needed a navigator and i also needed the device for the bush tracks. This lead me to the nuvi range with the nuvis own software and program called tracks 4 Australia i believe this is all i will require. If you are in
Melbourne i can highly recommend JA-GPS great advice and they are not 16 year olds working for drink money.
The best advice i can give is don't just research the thing get out and play with a few, i was looking at the 310 but when i physically looked at them the 660 is so much easier to use (physically bigger)
With the IC 400 it was a last minute decision originally GME 4400 was my choice but after looking at the units the IC 400 seems to be a better build unit, and you also get 88 programmable stations. Not too shaw on this or what it does exactly, time too read the manual.
The aerial for me was also not an easy decision to make but as a lot of people on here said get it up high.
After a trip to see Ms Lucy it became a lot clearer on the aerial decision making also if you want a good coffee maker see Ms Lucy great cuppa, not too shaw about the bonnet mods just yet, but that numatic contraption on the trailer controlling the tent very nice.
After looking at the options i decided on a heavy duty spring base and an elevated feed antenna with a flexi 1/4 wave whip with an additional aerial for a higher gain. The conclusion that i came too with aerials is no one aerial will do every thing you want, so if you have a heavy duty spring with a connector that you can change your whips on you have the best of both worlds depending on your conditions.
Well that my little blurb on this topic.
Thank you all again, this
forum is an excellent source of info.
Regards
Stephen Farrell

Mate! don't think you have to match Roachie to be a member of this
forum.
Roachie may have one of these gizmo's , but as sure as the sun rises in the East, Roachie has no idea how to work it.
ICOM 400 pro, now that was a good decision if I say so myself.
You are doing
well so far other than letting the Kadina Kid (aka as Russell) influence you (LOL)

Lucy,
No way i can match the man, the troopy cant carry that much stuff, though to be a member i thought all we had to do was have the occasional snicker at his antics and misfortunes.

Stephen
Its something like that.
Didn't they tell you there were three degrees of
membership.
First degree - When you pay your joining fee, Identify yourself and get presented with the sticker.
Second degree - When you join the 'attack' on that galoot Roachie
Third drgree - You obtain this exalted status when you become the owner/driver of a Toyota.
Welcome to the Third Degree of
Forum greatness which Roachie aspires to but never ever will attain. (LOL)

I will continue to sleep very
well at night, knowing that even though you 2 numbskulls now own a very sophisticated piece of equipment (the Nuvi; NOT the friggin tojo!!!!!), you still wouldn't be smart enough to find your way over here to God's country and bother me!!! ;-))

O-oh! Roachie
Just read your post again and your reference to 'a very sophisticated piece of equipment'.
Well that just removed you from the equation as an operator of the said piece of equipment.
Who are you going to use to set it up, turn it on and run it for you:
The kids, SWMBO (only as long as you don't leaver her behind - as you do), maybe blind Freddy from two streets away, Pesty or some other Nav smart Yota owner.
Remember now - where you see something like this - ON - thats what you use to start it.
Oh! this is so good, (ROFLMAO)
