Does anybody know an easy way to view a mobile phone coverage map?
I have a GSM handset currently on an AAPT plan which is about to expire. As AAPT does not have a good coverage in the bush, I will most likely change to Telstra or Optus (or whoever) depending on who can give me the best coverage for the price.
But trying to get a coverage map out of Telstra is maddening! You have to put in a street address and they will give you a coverage map for that suburb!
What flamin' good is that to a traveller?
I think I am suffering from "Grumpy Old Man Syndrome".
Gheers,

The best bush coverage is Telstra, I don't think the others are even in the same ball
park.
I agree; their site is not the easiest to use.

what about 3. their coverage is the worst of any, but they roam onto TLS, does this mean they are as good as TLS or is there some complicated system i dont understand.

F4Phantom -
If they roam onto Telstra when not in a 3 area, then their coverage will be as good as Telstra GSM.

Hi Seagecko -
One thing you may not know is that you can actually pan and zoom the Telstra coverage maps. You still need to enter a suburb, but you can use it as a starting point. Once you have the window open, the controls are up towards the top of the window, near the left hand side. If you click 'zoom out' you can then click within the map to zoom out. It's still pretty cumbersome to use, and for some reason is very slow tonight, but you can at least get a decent picture of where the coverage is... eventually!
Hint - if you want the best possible coverage, next g is your best bet. Ultimately it will have the best coverage.

Don't worry about maps, just get Next G with Telstra and you should have the best coverage available

Yes next g is the way to go but only if you get the right handset. LG are the ones to get according to telstra for rural users and they have a socket in the back to plug in your external aerial you just have to buy the patch lead.

Thanks Everybody,
I didn't specify that I'm not after reception in "remote" areas, just looking for normal service in normal towns.
Vodaphone has vastly superior service all along the highway from
Adelaide to
Cairns, but unfortunately don't go inland very much.
It looks like Telstra will be the way to go on my existing GSM phone, as the other telcos don't offer what my meagre budget will allow.
Cheers,
Seagecko

Seagecko, what you have to understand is no carrier is better or worse then another.
One carrier may work better in a certian area but not everywhere.
They advertise they cover 98% of populated Australia, in real terms this relates to about 3 to 4 % of Australia as a whole.
We use Vodafone for our GSM Nokia, Telsra for our CDMA and Optus for our satellite phone.
Maybe when the Next G system is running properly it may
well be the best but tme will tell.
Regards Richard

Actually, the coverage is 16-18%, not 2-4%. Add to this, you can't drive through 2/3rds of the country on good roads the country is fairly
well covered.
