The best way is to use the search function on the menu above.....with so much information floating around here you can gain the info you want.

Cheapest seems to be libraries, friends, relatives, etc.
Best: ???? too subjective a category.

Most libraries will not let you connect your laptop to their internet system. However an increasing number of commercial internet cafes will - you pay the same fees as if you were using their machines.

Best and cheapest is by using Bigpond Modem not Mobile , but you will need a small 12v to 240v Inverter to run the Modem , a 100w should do the trick, I am actually using the modem now , check out the plans on bigpond website

Yairs.... get yeself one of them small gerberators and a wireless modem thing. I actually found that for my requirements that I use my LG next G phone with an $8 a month data bizzo from Telstra. Mine came with the USB cord and software etc and for my $8 a month I get 200mb which I find enough to send email, do banking and billpaying and a bit of surfing (where is the next caravan park with a heated Spa and where they play mixed nude doubles scrabble). So far works well as long as you have mobile coverage.

Can we get a bit more information on the "$8 a month data bizzo from Telstra" - please ?

Using the (blue) Bigpond Wireless Modem the monthly charge for 200mb is:

G Fast 200MB 200 MB - $39.95 /month on plan

G Fast 200MB - Mobile 200 MB - $54.95 /month on plan

The Wireless 'Card' uses exactly the same Bigpond nextG system as the wireless 'modem' but costs more money with no added benefits at all, except the benefit of 'mobility' - if you want to use the computer away from an external 240v power source.

To get 200mb for only $8 a month, sign me up, I need more information.

I have just returned my (blue) Bigpond wireless modem as it only works where there is Mobile phone coverage anyway and most of the time I'm not getting any phone coverage, and still paying the "Bigpond Plan" price without having the opportunity to use the computer or the phone is unrealistic in my opinion.

The up-load and down-load speads are exactly the same with both the internal and external Bigpond nextG wireless modems.

I have just changed my CDMA Telstra phone plan over to Telstra Next G on a new RAZR (very pretty). It is on a $30,00 plan and I pay an extra $8.00 for 3MB (yes Three) data downloads per month. One e-mail with a couple of full size pictures attached, as some people do, is enough to blow the budget!

After checking up mine is a "data pack" that comes with my phone lg tuc 500. Not sure that it is available over the counter so to speak but Telstra should be able to supply you a "data pack" for any compatible phone.

Mr. Fawlty, your information appears to be 'faulty' as there definitely is no Telstra $8 x 200mb "data pack" as you've stated.

Telstra have a $8 "data pack" but it's only .. 3mb
They also have $16 "data pack" and it's only .. 10mb
They also have $29 "data pack" which is only .. 70mb

Your post above states-> "I actually found that for my requirements that I use my LG next G phone with an $8 a month data bizzo from Telstra. Mine came with the USB cord and software etc and for my $8 a month I get 200mb which I find enough to send email, do banking and billpaying and a bit of surfing"

As I've asked before, I now ask you again, please tell where the $8 x 200mb "datapack" is available as I think many people will go out and sign up for them today - I know I definitely will....

Yesterday I went to 2 x Telstra Shops, not franchises, and both have given me brochures showing the relevant information I've posted is accurate and correct.
I don't want to pay Telstra $53 for 200mb when you say I only have to pay $8 for 200mb.

Hi Mainey, I've just come back from the Telstra shop and I asked about that same Q and there was a promotion a while back which only went for 2 months, after that it's only $ 8 for 3MB

Umm, thought 3mb was way too small to "send email, do banking and billpaying and a bit of surfing" so when the promotion ends (ended ??) do you still have to spend the $50+ monthly for a 200mb plan ??

Hi Mike,
That pic was taken about 1999 when I had the old Mav. Done the run about 3 times, and can tell you that it changes a lot. On that trip with the Mav, it was early October, and the beach was extremely soft from Pt Culver right around to about Wattle Camp. Then it firmed up as we headed further SW, but we got into seaweed. Then OziExplorer picked up a track behind the dunes, and we made our way to that.
An earlier trip in the mid-90's had us cruising at 90km/h for most of the 80km beach. A trip in 2001 was similar. There is always seawead for the first 20 or so km at the western end, but that can be skirted by taking the track behind the dunes as far as one can.
Am interested how the inland (telegraph track) went. Have traced it on Google Earth, and will certainly have a go next time out, tho some people reckon the track disappears. In particular, I want to check out Wattle Camp, which was supposed to have been a line maintenance depot back in the 1800's.
Re Wylie Scarp, we've always camped at that spot amongst the banksias half-way up the slope. The track at the top heads to the highway, and also continues east on the telegraph line, which is quite driveable right thru to south-of-Caiguna. Lots of little historic thingys if one looks.
Re fishing, the main thing caught out there is salmon, of which I'm not a fan. I reckon that if you gave it to your neighbours, they would never speak to you again! I understand that beach fishing out towards Culver is good, and at the bottom of Toolinna Cove, but access to that has been closed off by Calm in recent years.
Off to Kalbarri and points north today. Goodbye rain!
Gerry

In answer to your question,

Leeching unsecured wireless is by far the cheapest way to get internet on your laptop while your traveling.

I believe this is best done in residential areas. (a friend told me)

cheers

The best way to get internet access wherever you are is with an Inmarsat BGan terminal.
The cheapest is to "borrow" other peoples unsecured WiFi connections.
Best and Cheapest don't usually go together.

Didn't see it mentioned above (but did read/scan through quickly). I use the Vodafone PCMCIA card (have done for couple of years). You can also get a USB version which can be used on other PC's which don't have PCMCIA slot. Reception is as good a vodafone mobile coverage so in most cities is okay. Check out their website...http://www.vodafone.com.au/Business/BusinessSolutions/VodafoneMobileBroadband/index.htm

Spent Saturday searching for any $8 plan or system, very cheapest I was shown is -> Wireless, 3 X-Series Silver, @ $20 month, 500 MB limit with a $100 per GB for in excess of 500 MB.

Now that's nowhere near the 'mr faulty' $8 system and it's megga expensive when you exceed the 500 MB limit.

So I guess I just wait till the $8 method is explained a bit more.

You need a NextG post-paid phone for which you buy a "data pack" - not something that goes on your back either... just a glorified way of accessing your hip pocket.
