Hello all, often read the
FORUM but this is my 1st post. I have recently bought myself a 1997 update 80 series with all the kit. It is fitted with ARB front bar, side steps & bars, rack, kaymar rear with tyre swing arm and I've upgraded to GoodYear MTR (285's). I've also installed a ARB aluminium isde awning and a set of TANAMAI aluminium drawers (fanbloodytastic).
Was only getting about 500 km to a 80 ltre tank of juice and had the injectors replaced to no avail. It's now time to get the pump looked at and then all being
well...........
I'll be going to AXT to have a after market (garrett) turbo fitted. Anyone had work done by them, what's your opinion and is it worth spending the extra coin on a boost compensator. (not getting an intercooler because I'll spend most of my time down south.)
Any
feedback will be appreciated.

Adam,
Hi and welcome to the
forum. I assume you have a diesel with the 1 HZ motor - if not please ignore the rest.
You should have two fuel tanks the main one is 95 litre capacity and the sub is 50 litre capacity - total of 145 litres. The figure you quoted does seem to be a bit low.
I have a 91 80 Series GXL with a DTS turbo fitted and my fuel economy before and after the fit was about 14.2 litres per 100 km. Based on those figures I can get approx 670 km from my main tank and 350 from my sub tank - total 1020 km - assuming I ran it until it was totally empty, this is highway figures and not towing or carrying heavy loads. Also with these figures remember that each motor is different and there are variances between them.
It would appear that you are defiantly using too much fuel so I would recommend that you get the pump looked at - also tell whoever is going to do it that you intend to fit a turbo. Also be aware that if it is the pump it can be expensive to fix - approx $2000 - so be prepared.
Once you get it turbod you will certainly notice the difference in power and performance, but not nessecary in fuel economy - one of the reasons why is because with the new found power people tend to drive with a lead foot and therefore use more fuel.
If you drive normally you will find that in cases when you had to put the boot in - i.e overtaking or going uphill - and therefore used more fuel, once you have the turbo it takes less power (and right foot) to achieve the same results and this is where the saving come in.
I don't know much about AXT but have read many articles on them in various 4WD mags and they seem to have a good name. You wont regret the decision to go the turbo - but you will need to get the fuel use problem sorted out.
Hope all goes
well.
Also if you are interested there is a new site just for 80 Series www.offroad80s.com

Adam,
I have a 97 80 series. About two years ago I fitted an AXT Turbo kit to it. I opted, on their advice, not to bother with an intercooler. I also did not go for the boost compensator.
Pre turbo my average fuel consumption was 11.80 litres/100km while post turbo it has gone up to 12.8 litres/100km. I thought at first the increase in fuel consumption was lead foot syndrome but that has not proved to be the case. No matter how I drive I cannot get down to the pre turbo rates. The only other thing I put on the vehicle were Poly Airbags and a
snorkel.
Performance wise the turbo is significantly better than pre turbo but when I'm towing a caravan up a long
hill it dies. Not as much as pre turbo but more than I expected. The temperature gauge remains at the same setting as pre turbo. In speaking to AXT they suggest I fit a 3" exhaust system to help it breathe better and to boost the pressure from 8 PSI to 9 PSI. I'm yet to decide on that. I am a bit worried about increasing the boost but the exhaust does sound a wise thing to do.
AXT were good to deal with. They spent a lot of time talking to me about the turbo and they were not in sales pitch mode, they talked technically and answered all my questions. That's why I went with them. I don't think their turbo's give any better performance than say DTS or Safari, and others but they gained my confidence and I will be going back there for the exhaust system if I proceed.
I hope that give some info you were searching for.

My reply mirrors the above exactly but i have a 2.5" exhaust fitteds now and performance is slightly better and the fuel usage is back to pre turbo levels. The 1HZ turbos really
well and you won't regret it.

Thanks for the tips - appreciate it. I'll let you know in due course what the outcome is. I'll have to learn how to post a photo of the beloved cruiser.

G'day Adam,
I agree with the previous posts, except fuel use figures, could never get
mine down as low as some of the suggested figures, before or after turbo fitment!
More power is available, average consumption went up slightly.
You may need to get injectors/pump checked. I get approx 640km from the main and just about 400km from the sub 90L/55L tanks (with a modified and heavier vehicle). This drops when going off road.
Cheers,
Ross
