I am travelling to the Cape in July and am toying with the idea of taking a 1 man "Bass" kayak along to help get amongst the fish. The thought of being in a small kayak in crocodile country doesn't inspire me with much confidence.

I am seeking advice from anyone familiar with that part of the world as to the advisability of using a kayak for fishing and how much "safe" water I am likely to encounter. Are there coc free gorges and billabongs where a kayak would be useful?

Thanks in advance

There are a couple of members on this site who work the Cape. Cape Your Connections I think is one.
I thought the first rule was that you assumed there were crocs everwhere up there. I fished a lot of the east coast from a cruiser where we accessed the rivers from a tinnie, & two points, one - we saw crocks in backwaters and amongst mangroves and they like to come up and have a sniff, a couple were bigger than the tinnie, two - all the fish up there fight hard and dirty and there are plenty of sharks, a couple of time we had to fire up the motor and chase our fish because they were so strong and nearly spooled the reel. If you hooked a Spaniard you'd finish up in Fiji
Would I get in a kyak up there - you gotta be dreamin' Carpe Diem

Hi Empty,
I take it that you’ve never come across a croc in the wild, not to mention the sharks that Cocka mentioned in his reply. If you do decide to go in with a kayak make sure you get a mate to video it form a boat….the footage could be worth a dollar or two :-))

Cheers

I love kayaking. I have an inflateable I'll probably be taking in a few weeks to North Qld. I don't think I'll be going any where near saltie territory though!Royce www.funshow.com.au

empty Ive only seen one setup using canoes that i would consider.

this bloke had two canadian canoes in a cat config and his alloy roof rack became the base and bolted onto the top of the canoes and a 15 hp on the back .very stable and the whole setup packed back onto the roof smart idea i thought .

seen on the saltie end of the daly and some of the crocs there have to wait for high tide to turn around in the river .

Empty,

I lived in Townsville for nearly six years and from my experience it is best to assume that all rivers in Nth Qld from Rockhampton up may have crocs in them. Just because you can't see them it dosen't mean that they are not there. Also in the big rivers there is also the possiblity of sharks such a the Bull Shark - very dangerous animal. Contact the National Parks people in the area and ask them, I am sure that they will give you the best advice. Enjoy your trip - but don't take any un-nessecary risks with the wildlife.

A canoe viewed from under water with paddles dipping in and out resembles a croc , if you venture into the teritory of a male he will attack it to defend his doman and female ,in other words take a bible and or a shot gun not a fishing rod Born to drive a 4x4 , not a keyboard
