Given that 2007 was a disaster (courtesy of the tax man) I'm now starting the preliminary planning for a "cross country" trip starting from
Mulan, travelling west past
lake Gregory, then North of Mt Bannerman and over the Mc Clintock Range to the Southern end of Ruby Plains Station (running parallel to the Tanami).
At this stage I haven't spoken to Merve Wortely, the Elders at
Mulan or any of the others as yet.
Two questions:
1. Has anyone travelled through the specific area (I'm not talking about the Tanami or the Canning)?
2. I'll need two other cars suitably equipped for the trip. Any volunteers? (If your worried about getting your car scratched or damaged, this is not for you).
On the latter point, We'll need a person with very good navigation knowledge, and a mechanic.
I will also be inviting a couple of the local Aborginal people to join us for the trip.
Start date. May or June 2008.
Regards
Kim

Yes, I'm looking forward to it. Some of the escarpment up there are very difficult to cross. From past experience, many of the station owners will give you aerial support for a couple of hours.
However, this time I want to involve the Aboriginal community, which I hav'nt done in the past.

That's an interesting question, which I have'nt given much thought to.
First of all I have no interest in doing something for the sake of it. Secondly, this is not about a charity event.
Met an old Aboriginal fella at Balgo a couple of years ago. We sat down under the tree opposite the community centre and had a bit of a yarn.
Turned out he was part of the last Droving team down the Canning. Had quite a bit of discussion about the area west of Mulin.
This fella like a few others, is very proud of his cattle
heritage, so I'm going to invite him along.
There is also a
young Aboriginal in
Mulan who invited me into his home back in 2004. A great family and we had a lot of laughs.

Kim.
Thanks for the reply, That gives an idea of the person you want, may I suggest you are a sensitive person, not in a hurry and more interested in people than showing off how tough your vehicle is. Some people are attracted to trips as a sort of race or competition, that would not be the sort of person you wont, am I right?

That's last thing I want. You can't rush accross this sort of country. Otherwise things will start to break very quickly.

Hi Kim,
Where is
Mulan (or Mulin)?
Sounds like a good trip. Will you be skirting the
creek country to the north of Mt. Bannerman or will you head straight north east to the McClintocks?
There's a couple of pools near Mt. Bannerman, Redleap Pool and Shiddi Pool (Mount and pools all named by Carnegie) but I have not been there.
Cheers
Alan

Mulan is a small Aboriginal community south of the Tanami Rd (
Halls Creek end). They were originally part of Balgo, but broke away in the late 70’s to establish their own community on the eastern side of
Lake Gregory (Walmajarri people).
In answer to your second question. I have'nt mapped the route yet. There is a lot of work to do including discussions with my contacts up there.
Regards
Kim

Mulan is about 40kms west of Balgo which is about 30kms west of the Tanami road. The turn off to Balgo is about 80kms from the
WA/NT border on the Tanami.
Mulan is very close to
Lake Gregory, about 4kms further west and if you continue on from the shores of the Lake you will hit the Canning in about 100kms but you are then travelling in a NW direction. The route, through station tracks is/was used when the
Sturt creek cut the Tanami road at Billiluna.

My Goodness!! 3 Victorians telling me something I didn't know about my own state!! Thats a first - Thankyou :)))
The area south of there -
Mount Wilson. Thats where Kieran Kelly and
Andrew Harper finished their camel expedition as detailed in Tanami.
And check out Point Alphonse south of that - how cool does that look in google earth.

I'm not exactly sure what "respose" means. Dog has advised to use "response" as an alternative!
