Hi all,
We are about to travel from Perth to Adelaide at the end of this month. Towing a small van behind a 100 series diesel. We are looking for ideas of where NOT to plan an over night stop over! for safety reasons etc.... has anyone done this trip recently? any advice? looking at probably taking 4-6 days.
Cheers
John & Gail

John there is nowhere dangerous between Perth and Adelaide. You are on a major sealed highway.

ha! thanks for that, I was mainly referring to over night stays and caravan parks/towns to avoid. I've never seen someone write a bad review on themselves!

Not sure who I'm advising - either John or Fairlane, but the advice is still the same - no particular towns are unsafe. This is Australia. Doesn't mean you won't face danger but it can be anywhere and is also very unlikely. I have travelled the length and breadth of the country by caravan and motorbike. Slept in parks from 5 star to no star. In a caravan, in a hike tent, in 5 star hotels and cheap country pubs. I truly have never felt the slightest bit in danger. I've been cold, wet, hungry at times but never felt in danger. Go forth young man, cross the plain and don't worry !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In hear what you are saying but just a wary question I thought I would ask. having come from northern NSW I would not reccomend a stay at Coraki unless you don't need sleep.
basically asking for local knowledge.
cheers!

If you are worried about security, stop in a recognised overnight rest area where you will have company. Otherwise pull off the road anywhere you like. The Yalata area is aboriginal land, and i understand they frown on camping there, otherwise plenty of scope. No problems encountered - safer than in the suburbs. We have been over and back three times, and have enjoyed each trip. Enjoy your drive.

I'll stick my neck out as usual.
I've been over and back about six times (family there ) and will be doing it again in a few weeks by myself. As a solo traveller I tend to be a tad more skittish than, say, a 20yo with his mates.
I'll be avoiding staying in Ceduna as I've had poor experiences in certain parts. Pity as its such a nice place.
Apart from high fuel and accommodation prices, I can't whinge about the rest of the trip. It can be very enjoyable. I always find it far from boring (it usually rains on me out there).
Do expect to be stopped by the boys in blue around Eucla for a 'license check'. They've never failed me yet.
The fruit fly people are much nicer at Ceduna than anywhere else I've been. Maybe they're used to tired travellers.

We crossed from Norseman 2 weeks ago-to Streaky bay then heading home.
1st Try and have a look at the weather reports to see if you can pick a time with less winds and less rains - we had fine run accross-friends did it 2 weeks latter and blew all the time.
2nd Lots of friendly spots along the road where you will see others in Vans pulled up for the night. Some more protected than ohers out of the wind.Just pull in when you see others stopping and go and have a quick chat.generally if others are friendly, then you have picked a good spot,if not you simply say nicely that you feel you might just move on for a while longer.Nullabor Roadhouse were friendly and it was interesting to see the Dingoes come out a sunset. Also make sure you plan to stop at Streaky Bay Caravan Park south of Ceduna, what a beautiful spot and from there, spend a day along the coast road down as far as the Seal Colony. These places all depend on how windy it can get.Have a nice trip and do try and take your time.

Hello All

Streaky Bay is highly recommended , contender for the prettiest town in Australia . Flinders Highway is not to be missed . Cheapest fuel on the Nullabor was at Mundrabilla . Any Truck Stop is completely safe . Madura looked better and quieter than the others .

Agree with all - only place you need worry about avoiding is Yalata. Your maps and signs will confirm that roadside camping is not permitted.

Or you could just do the drive in one day like we did long ago! Yep YOUNG AND STUPID.
Now is the only time you own
Decide now what you will,
Place faith not in tomorrow
For the clock may then be still
