I am currently looking at having a mechanic tighten/re-pack (fit extra shim) to the rear LSD of my 1996 Toyota Landcruiser HZJ80. In its current state, it is next to "useless" in the bush. The car is approaching 200,000km and I am also having a 4Terrain HD clutch installed. I have already pre-purchased the HD clutch. This will all be happening in just over 2 weeks.
I have heard that modifying the LSD may cause extra wear to tyres and axles if "too tight". Is there anything else that I need to be aware of for normal everyday driving.
I am hoping I can get some pros and cons opinions from others that may have done the same. I am still unsure whether this is the right thing to do. I am also considering an air-locker to the rear as another option, but this will be at least 3 times more expensive.
Thanks in advance ..
cheers .. Kym

Hi Kym,
Here are my thoughts for what they are worth.
I have a 91 80 Series GXL and I tossed the rear LSD. At the time I considered retightning the LSD but was advised by others that I would only be throwing my money away as it would eventually loosen and I'd be back to my original start point.
I eventually fitted a Lockrite Locker in the rear diff - simply because I couldn't afford an air locker and it has certainly helped.
IMHO maybe your should consider an 'automatic type locker' now rather than waste money on doing the LSD and when you can afford the air locker you should be able to sell the auto locker second hand.

Kym,
An air locker certainly will have huge benefits over a Toyo LSD. Under heavy work the Toyo LSD has a very limited useful life expectancy.
As far as tyre wear goes, yes it does increase a bit but not substantially, although it will depend on how its driven and how much you tighten the LSD. Axle wear, can't comment.

I have just recently (4weeks) had my ARB air locker installed on my RA Rodeo. There was nothing really wrong with my LSD but the improvement with the air locker is great.
Pros- still more traction than re-packed LSD.
does not affect tyre wear when on road as you can select when you want it locked or open.
you get a good quality compressor to pump up tyres when bush.
mine has got me heaps more
places than i thought i could be able to go.
cons- cost
My mates and I used to fit extra shims to the LSD's in our nissan sports car when we used to race cars and it was ok for on road but still not as good as a locker off road. I say go the locker...

Mate adding a extra shim will do Sweet F all
What you want is a extra clutch pack and to change the way is is packed.
You factory LSD will be done somthing like this
shim, friction, steel, steel, friction, steel, steel, friction, side gear
You want it like this>
shim, friction, steel, friction, steel, friction, steel, friction, side gear.
Giving you 8 Clutch disks Vs 6 for factory, and as they are now stacked in a alternating method it is able to hold a garter toque before slipping.
Cheers.
