Hi thanks for an imformative site,
Im currently looking at purchasing a 1993 80 series, 1hz engine (non turbo), Manual, GXL, with 185000ks on the clock. Its in good nick with a few minor wear and tear marks.(Acceptable im my eyes.)
Can anyone advise me of any obvious flaws in this model that I should investigate.
any help appreciated.

main flaw is is its age. I have been told the chasis can crack around the steering box
When buying
mine this is what I found
- Gave it stick. Thats thae advantage of living in the country. should pull 140-150. That is how i found the radiator and clutch fan needed replacement
- Afterwards check for oil leaks
- Get on the dirt lock the hubs engage low range and do full lock turns both land r there should be no cv clunking
- Jack up front
wheels and check for bearing play -
mine had a shot one
take it on roughground aparantly the
barn door has a penchant for squeeking (
mine didnt)

Like any 4wd, it depends on how
well its been serviced as to how long it will last. Checks could include gearbox noise, leaking steering pump, clutch wear, blowing blue smoke (engine), etc etc.
Has the
water pump and injection pump (and injectors) had a service ? Were the timing belts replaced every 100K ?

Mate,
Its biggest flaw is proberly its front diff - it is smaller than the rear diff.
Check for driveline blacklash in the constand 4WD. You will feel it when you drive and if it feels real bad I would have it checked. Basically the splines on the axels get worn due to the constant 4WD and this causes the backlash.

not as bad as the Myth suggests I know people running 240kw at the flywheel in there 80s with no diff problems (cvs are a different matter)

Mine has done almost 400,000km and had no major problems. The CVs have been replaced, and the front drive flanges, but the diffs are still OK. Does seem to spit out front uni joints, but I think that might have been my fault (poor installation technique!).
The 1HZ needs new injectors, but otherwise still pulls like a locomotive and burns diesel like it's free.
All in all, I have no regrets from buying this vehicle.
Cheers
John

Thanks to all,
will look at all the above in more detail.
I have noticed a leak around What I think is the speedo drive into the transfer case. may be wrong. But it is need of repair.
