Howdy
Thinking of going between
Bright and
Omeo through Mt Hotham in a couple of days.
Would I have to have chains and if so could I hire some at
Bright and leave at
Omeo ???
I have a Prodo.
Thanks

Chains "YES"
Hire at
Bright & leave at
Omeo "I would doubt that very much"
A great spot to visit.
Cheers,
Fazz

You will not be allowed past the checking station unless you have a 4b....last time up there with my 4b i had to stop on a
hill because oncoming car touched their breaks and did some 360's infront of me....could not get going again, started sliding towards
cliff....wont go up there again without them....just incase.
Other than that, you will thoroughly enjoy the
views....the mountains down in the valley are normal sized ones even thou they look like ant nests :)

Ring Adina's ski hire in
Bright they will be able to advise you.I think that there is some exchange between
Bright and
Omeo for chains.

Ring Billie's Ski Hire in
Omeo on (03) 5159 1600.
They have an arrangement with another hirer - I'm pretty sure it's Hoys in Harrietville. You can definately hire on the Harrietville (
Bright) side and drop off in
Omeo.
You definately need to carry chains. In a 4wd (and I don't mean a soft roader) you will be unlikely to be required to fit them, but if there's a road in Victoria where chains will be fitted to 4wds it's usually the Hotham road.
The fines are steep for not carrying chains, and also for not fitting them if directed to do so. Also, watch out for the 40kmh zones around the chain fitting bays.
I'll be up there Sunday.
Dave

Have not been there in winter, but the
views from
the summit of Hotham on a clear sunny day are fabulous ! You might need to ask a local re access to the actual summit (a wind swept knoll, with a radio
shack and a cairn on it - the ski resorts etc. are not on the actual summit) - the sealed road is close by though, but you need to
park and walk up - only a few hundred metres - it wasn't
sign posted last year.
