Just bought new electric winch low mount.
Where I bought it recommend mounting winch on bracket with the bolts facing down. Have been told (by various others) to mount winch with bolts through Bull bar (reinforced) so when winching you are pulling against the bar and no pressure on bolts on winch casing. ie turn winch 90%. I used to have high mount warn in similar way.
Advice would be appreciated

Hi Ed,
Have had cause to
test this theory. I have a 100 series TD with an early commercial ARB deluxe bar. It has provision to mount the winch horizontal, or vertical on the bar. The horizontal position was my choice as it was mounted directly to the chassis behind the crush zones that make the bullbar airbag compatible and it looked stronger. When using the winch for the second time in anger, the ARB mounting bracket twisted with the pressure of the winching. It is a 12,000lb winch, basically the tube the winch plate was mounted to crushed. I have since decided that as soon as I put the winch back on I will be mounting it to the Bullbar. What this has shown me is the following. The winch is actually very strong. There was no visible signs of warping or twisting of the bolts or the winch carrier once the bolts were loosened off the mount. I have stripped the winch as while trying to use it it was making all sorts of bad nioses as it was trying to wind in while twisted. The winch would not wind out. There is not a mark on any fo the gears from damage which I was happy about, It is an Ironman winch and as such I am now confident the winch is
well made, although put together a little bit rough.

Thanks Raunchy
I have been surfing net since posting this and found this problem with a couple of others with same problem. The winch I bought was a Tiger (Chinese I know) but 1/4 price of Warn (and I have blown 2 of those up!) Mate bought a Tmax twice the price but same in appearance.
Mine is 97 GQ with ARB non winch bar I got steel today for reinforcing and think I will go with bolting to bar. Used to to it that way before
Thanks

i've mounted
mine directly to the bullbar. its a 10,000lb and when doing a pull it actually bent/bulged the steel plate (about 5-8mm)or face of the bullbar. Eventually I'll get around to cutting some thick plate (with a slot for the cable) to go between the winch and the bullbar to give the mounting area some more strength.

I can remember a low mount ripping off the front when they first came out years ago and it was mounted horizontally.
Wish we'd had a video camera as at the time it was pretty funny seeing the winch rip itself out of the bullbar and fly through the air to smack into the tree which was being used as an anchor point. Fortunately it was only a few metres and no one was in the way.
I've also seen fitting instructions that say the low mounts can be mounted either way, personally I'd much rather have the winch mounted vertically behind a plate.
Much less stress on mounting bolts and the end casings of the winch which would be preferable I'd think.

I agree with the other answers
I currently have my winch mounted horizontally and I'm not real flash with that idea
The bolts are are being pulled side on and I'm assured by the
well know 4WD accessory place that the bolts and mounting plate are up to the task,I would much prefer to have my winch pull against the back of bull bar

Thanks to you all I think I will reinforce the bull bar with angle and Plate and bolt direct, Heavy I know but don't want winch wrapped around tree like traveller 2.
But this weekend either fitting bull bar or painting house Mrs can paint but cannot weld so looks like I will have to do winch!!!
