Hello to all;
A question for all of you experienced 4wd owners out there.
I have had a Navara STR 3.0 D for for a couple of years now and on my second set of BFG All Terrain Tyres. The first set lasted me around 70k and could have got a little more except for uneven wear on the front tyres (inside wear). I suspected this may have been due to the dealer not getting them aligned when the dealer put them on. However I am on my second set of BFG's and have noticed a similar pattern starting to emerge with this set (front tyres wearing on the inside). The new set has been on for close to two years (done around 25000 km) now and I had them aligned and balanced when I bought them. I have not done a great deal of 4wding in the last two years apart from the last 4 weeks crossing the Simpson. I assume it may just be an alignment issue but thought I would put the question out there in case any one knows of any other causes... I have will be taking the car in for an alignment tomorrow and will ask the tyre people their thoughts, but my past experiences with the local tyre dealers in
Canberra has left a bad taste in my mouth and I have no confidence in the advice they dispense.

Lyndon and Axle I think you have problems!!! I have had around 100K on the last 4 vehicles I've had and that's not unusual.

Laz, in my opinion you should get the wheel alignment done more often, perhaps every 10,000 km. You may have camber/castor issues also but as I have zero knowledge of Navaras have no idea how common that might be. Note that some unevenness in wear is to be expected in general. Also, and very important, rotate the tyres to even out the wear. I rotate my tyres at 5,000 km
services, but 10,000 km is more usual. Casper

Laz, you also have not mentioned whether or not you have rotated them.Ifnot you should do them every 10000k,but as said above more alignments more often is a good plan also.hope you get it sorted any way.
Cheers Bob.

Laz,
Deflationary a wheel alignment problem, if wearing both front tyres on the onside you have excessive toe out.
All the best tomorrow,
Fazz

Sorry Laz,
The "o" & "i" are side by side on the key board that should have read .
If excessive tyre wear on the inside you have to much toe OUT.
Again, best of luck tomorrow,
Fazz

I can't comment on the tyres but I would swap them around (front to back and visa-versa) and get a wheel alignment ASAP. sounds like an alignment problem to me
Cheers Luke

I have had a similar experience with the
wheels wearing more on the outside, more on the passenger than driver side. Immediately I thought alignment so I sent the patrol in to be done. The feedback I got was that the alignment was pretty good but it needed a camber kit.
I thought what the? you mean caster correction? no, camber.
I thought with a live axle there'd be no such thing and said so. They begged to differ. I haven't had it done yet but I suppose it may need doing sometime......

I have a Terrano 2 & had exactly the same frustrating problem, even after 3 or 4 wheel alignments, each time the aligner said the previous aligner had no idea!
The problem is simple, lazy or ill trained wheel aligners, many aligners only do the simple adjustments & don't bother with shims.
I finally found somebody that did the job properly & after around 70,000 kms it still shows no
sign of irregular wear, & that includes heaps of High Country & Outback kms.
All that I have done in that time is call in to the aligners & ask them to look at the tyre wear, with the view to getting it realigned if there is any irregularity, thankfully it has been OK.
