With the warranty about to expire, we have to make the decision on whether or not to take the extended warranty - $1,150. Vehicle has only done 40,000km.
I tend to lean on the no side, due to the reliablility etc of the vehicle and of course the cost.
What are your thoughts?

Hi. We have recently had the same decision to make and leant to the "no" side for similar reasons to those you mentioned.

I have a ten year old 80 series and have yet to take it in for warranty work.

You can get a lot of fixing done for $1150 if something does go wrong.

Ten years ago you may have, not any more!

Well - if Prickle reckons he is going to get stuff happen worth more than a grand, his money would be better spent on an RAA inspection of the vehicle before the warranty expires and get anything fixed under the original warranty.

Those extended warranties have so many conditions that you would be hard put to get anything worth more than that out of them. And good luck getting hold of the conditions sheet before you have paid up.

I purchased a 2003 model L/C T/D in 2005 with the extended warranty paid for. When I tried to get the papers for the warranty they said that it had done over 90000kms and they couldn't ok the warranty. The money for the extended warranty was returned to me and I was that much better off and I have not had to spend a cent, except for servicing, since then.

Be afraid , be very afraid of so called extended warranty that you fork out good $s for , read and reread the fine print , you will be suprised in what these warranties do NOT cover , $ coverage per item claim will leave a lot to be desired ,most will not cover a couple of hrs labour cost let alone the parts required and if any minor servicing infringement is found the warranty is void. IE: 100 thou service performed at 100,500 the warranty company has a legal out.

As a few others have pointed out read the policy very carefully.

You generally have to take your vehicle back to the place of purchase for service, if not forget warranty. This makes it hard when, lets say, you are doing "the gray nomad thing".

Could be different with a genuine factory warranty????

Prickle, my suggestion."Save your money"

Cheers,
Fazz.

I would go the extendered warranty if it is backed by Toyota.

Its a peace of mind thing...if you broke down say at Burke and the part that failed was worth a $100.00 thats fine but if you had to get it towed 500 kilometer to a service dealer I bet you would of wanted that warranty.

You might aswell get rid of your car and home insurance at the same time...you heard it before "Oh I had insurance for 30 years and only stopped it 5 days ago because I did not need it........I didn't know the house was going to burn down did I."

Its not the cost of repairs or parts its the cost of towing ask "Ross and Moses" about warrantys when he broke down at Warraweena.

Don't get factory backed extendered warrantys confused with normal extendered warrantys.

And I know Toyotas never brake down and houses don't burn down.

Sorry forgot to mention this a direct copy (scannned) from the extended Toyota warranty booklet for my wifes car. There is a lot of other things that are in the book that it does not cover but too much to post on here. This follows up directly after the normal 3 years are up but this book must be stamped along with the normal service book so that when the 3 years are up this one takes over. I wont be proceeding with the extra warranty. Regards Steve M

Are you sure that is a Toyota Factory backed warranty, it sounds like a warranty the dealer backs an do on there behalf.

A factory backed warranty can not tell you where you have to have your vehicle serviced but a warranty that a dealer backs themselves can.

A number of new car dealers offer extendered warrantys when you by a new vehicle from them and they say they will warrant the vehicle for extra time aslong as you have the vehicle serviced by them, this is a bit of a bonus they offer there customer but they make it up in service costs because you have to take it back to them.

We have extendered factory backed warranties on some of our business vehicles and they cover everything the new vehicle warranty covered.

I would check with Toyota Australia about your warranty.

I would be surprised if it is from Toyota Australia.

Just had a look at the factory backed Toyota warranty.

You can use any Toyota dealer or quailified repairer.

You can choose 1,2 or 3 years.

Covers everything the factory warranty covers.

No cost limits per claim or number of claims.

Vehicle has to be serviced as per Toyota's owners manual.

Hi there Richard, Im pretty sure you are 100% correct, just looked at the book again and has on the front of it TOYOTA but under it has the dealers name so will see if I can still get the Genuine Toyota extended warranty. Will follow up on monday about that. One thing I do remember when I bought a new Toyota in 94 an did take out the extended warranty ($600 for memory) was that it did have to be serviced byToyota from day one eg couldnt take it to say Kmart had to be done by a Toyota dealer but any dealer not just Lander. Well there you go by some one else asking a question we all find out some thing new. I worked for them for 4 years but was never involved in that part of it. I'm just wondering if I can still get the extra care warranty from Toyota or it should have been agreed on prior to taking delivery of new car ?? Find out on monday I suppose. It has had its last service done by the dealer, 6 month service 10k but has only done 6k. Thanks Richard. Regards Steve M

I used to work for the insurance company that did the Toyota/Dealer extended warranty. Consequently I didn't bother.

You deal with the insurance company and not the vehicle manufacturer in the event of a claim.

I've done so many mods that I'd probably get knocked back anyway.

Was it the Toyota dealers extendered warranty as provided by the dealer thenselves or was it a factory Toyota warranty provided by Toyota Australia.

We have a claim for a leaking welsh plug on one of our 4.5 year old Fords, we asked the dealer the process of claim and he said it goes through as a Ford claim to the Ford Motor Company and then the Ford Motor Company either claims it from Swan Insurance as they are the underwritters or pay it direct.

A reply comes back in about 5 minutes.

I would say the factory extendered warrantys that the manufacture have are differant to the ones direct from the insusrance companys.

We asked them before we put our vehicles on the warrantys alotof questions like" if the glove box light or catch stoped working would it be covered" the reply we got back was "what ever is covered on a new vehicle will be covered on yours.

We have had claims for 6 stacker CD player stopped working, driver side window switch and regulator, leaking side window, front shockers, a coolant leak and now a welsh plug. All have been approved with no hassles.

Peace of mind maybe, but not worth the paper its printed on.
I took out extended warranty when purchased my 02 LC100 TD
this I was told would extend warranty to 2009 or 140K whichever
comes first (74K currently).
12mths ago, prior to leaving on trip to Gibson Desert (from Brisbane) my fuel tank gauage was playing up. Took it back to the
dealer and was told they wouldn't cover it by warranty.
(implying it was a useless piece of paper - i suggested it was good enough to sell to me a the time!)
Toyota in their wisdom agreed to fix problem (took 3 weeks)
but it came under what they refer to as Customer Satisfaction Agreement.
(can only be described as a "Gotcha"....by the short n curlies)
Thats is - You must agree to pay 50% towards the labour costs!
In my case that was my cheapest option, as the entire instrument cluster (dash) had to be replaced.
Good luck, Toyota's a pretty reliable, I'd be saving my money.
Cheers
Leigh
