Hi
we've just decided to buy a pop-top caravan (has to be pop top to fit through our garage) and we were going to buy the jayco expanda 16.49-3, family version with wc and shower.
However, after reading several posts on forums on the net it seems that the Windsor models are less likely to let in dust and also fold down better after rain (ie. bedding stays drier apparently). I can't find a Windsor distributor in or near
Perth, can anyone advise on whether my comparison is accurate?
Has anyone got a Jayco expanda they're happy with?
Paula

Hi stockely-paula
I have just recently brought a Jayco Eagle outback camper van I will be taking it for a test run up near Karijini NP and Mill stream so I will let you know how it goes when I get back on Sept 27th in how it went with the dust, as of the rain I hope I don't get any on my holidays lol. That's if you can wait that long but I am sure there will be others that have some advise for you.

Howdy, I can't speak from personal experience but I do have a friend who has had an Expanda and now has a Rapid. He prefers the Rapid because when the wall folds up to form the bed it provides a solid roof which helps keep the canvas dry.

Yeah, that's what I heard. Is he in WA though? Not sure where I can get a Rapid in WA or even look at them.

Hi Paula,
I had a Windsor Rapid and reckon they are great. The Jayco Expanda is the closest competitor to the Rapid but still lacks the hard roof over the sleeping area and no canvas on the bedding.
While I was "sold" on the dry bed issue when I got the Rapid, my current Camprite has this issue and it actually isn't that big a deal! I have packed up in the wet (rivers of
water running off the canvas) with "wet" canvas going directly onto bedding yet it didn't affect the bedding.
I carry plastic painting sheets under the mattress to put over the bedding when wet but have yet to actually use them (thought I could pack up before the rain hit).
Point is, look at other differences in the vans and weigh them up accordingly. While the Rapid definetely has a design advantage here, are their any other advantages of the Expanda?
Cheers
Captain

Hi Paula, Honestly I am going to be bias as I own a 16.49.1 outback expanda. I chose the Expanda over the windsor as the bed ends are bigger in my expanda. I dont find the canvas ends to be any issue at all as soon as the flys are up there are no problems.
I started a site
Expanda Owners Australia over 12 months ago feel free to pay a visit there are a number of interesting things about Epandas good and bad on this site.

Thanks for this, have had a quick look at your site but need to have a better look. Looked at the Rapid today and it certainly is a good design but a lot more pricey too. Am going to have another look at both of them and will check out the size of the bed ends! Also, have no idea what the 'flys' are - are they extra bits to put over the ends??

Hey, Worm, I have a couple of questions if you don't mind. It's actually the 16.49.3 I'm looking at, not the 2, I got confused.
Size has decided for me now as the Rapid is a bit wider and can't fit through to my back yard (past
the pool filter!!
However, read a bit more about th Jayco today and haven't had a chance to ask the dealer. Stuff I read said that you can't easily get inside the van without it being set up, or get the awning out. So, if you're travelling you might not be able to pop in and have a cuppa inside for example.
They were 2004 posts so not sure if that applied to older models or is still a problem. Also, there was something about switching the fridge voltage over, i.e., if you forget before you fold up it's a bit of a nightmare to get back in and switch over. Is this still the case?

Hi Paula,
I have the 16.49.1 which is the same style as the 16.49.3 but without the shower/
toilet. I am about 177cm tall have no problems getting in the van for roadside stops and have done this many times. Even if you wanted to raise the roof it takes all of seconds and by flicking one lever the awning goes up with the roof. The only restrictions of getting to anything in the expanda is when the bed ends are closed you cant get access to the storage areas under the beds. So when you order the van get external hatches fitted this will then solve this problem. Trust me everything is still accessible with the roof down and beds closed you just cant run the aircon as the roof covers the intake vent for the aircon.

Cheers for that, seen as I'm only 155 cm tall and my husband only about 167 we should be fine! Good tip about getting the external hatches fitted. What about the fridge voltage thing, do you get that? Is that true?

Sorry, I have another query, did you upgrade your fridge? If you do get the bigger fridge do you know if you lose your benchtop or does it still fit under?

Hi Paula, I did upgrade my fridge to the 150 litre we did lose some bench space but trust me there is still plenty of other bench space available. The 150 litre is fantastic as it takes heaps of food. This fridge is also tropically rated and operates excellently in high temperature. All control switches to change the fridge from gas, 240volt and 12 volt are on the fridge and since you can walk around the van with the roof down there is no problems switching between power source. On the Expanda website if you go to the photo section and open up my folder Brads interior you will see exactly how my interiour lay out is. Always willing to help.
Cheers Worm.
