What lubricant do you use

Ok troops - I have just bought me a really really really really really really really nice 1996 80 series cruiser and would like to take your advice and give it a new timing belt , filters and oil.

The question is with 290ks on the clock and according to a mechanic friend the motor sounds tight - whatever that means, what oil should I be using in her?

I will NOT be using cheap stuff so your valuable input is requested.

I live in Cairns - tropical and intend to venture west across the top and maybe even up the Cape..

My '98 Petrol Prado uses Penrite HPR 10 semi-synthetic, $40 for 5 Litres. My wifes VT Commodore has Catrol GTX 2, $17 for 5 litres. Mine has 170,000km, hers 160,000km. Last oil change the Castrol was black as black while Penrite still had a golden touch to it. Both cars have been well serviced, maybe it's Toyota engines being cleaner than Holden ones, maybe it's the oil? Who knows, but I'll keep using Penrite in the Prado and down the track when finances improve I'd like to use their fully synthetic one.

It means the Castrol is cleaning the engine and the synthetic Penrite isn't. Oil in a diesel is black before you get around the block by the way.

Andrew X , would you care to bet on your statement "oil in a diesel is black before you get around the block" ,, 372,000 klm ,oil+filter change every 5 thou and funny that my oil stays a light golden colour for the duration.

I use Synforce Cruiser Oil in mine, and very happy with it. Now up to 396,000 km and still going strong.

i was going to ask that,anyway i swear by peak global performance diesel 15w40 used it in various diesels over 15 years and wouldnt use anything else,good start up flow and hot oil pressure,pull it out after 5000k and its still has a golden colouur to it.cheers Paul

Hi Crazy Mutt,

In the last three Landcruiser diesels I've used Rimula X, not the dearest nor the cheapest but they've all done better than 500,000 k's on the stuff.

The latest Troopy RV factory TD is still on Rimula X. After 50,000 k's is doing fine, I know it's barely run in but the oil seems to work.

I'll put in a vote for Shell Rimula X 15W/40, as well. Been using it for many years, with no dramas.

Any diesel oil would do, as long as services are regular.

I have owned 7 1HZ cruisers and only put Penrite HPR diesel oil in them, I also use Sakura filters.

I change my oil, oil filter and fuel filter every 6000/ 6500 km, I check air filter, grease and other fluids as well.

These filters and oil have never let me down, I have 1 engine that has done 300000 km 1 that has done 170000 1 that has done 270000 and my new one about to do 100000, they purrs like a kittens.

G/day Crazy dog, I use Penrite HPR 30.My old man uses HPR Diesel for his1HZ . Have been using it for years and absolutely love it. Had a friend service my troopy once and he used conaco and it used more oil than petrol, I changed back to penrite and have never had the problem again.Cheere Troopytrek

You can use any oil you like 'cos by 290,000km the enigine is well run iun. Probably use a thinner oil for the tropics. Still, there is lots of good advice on here re oils. I use whatever my garageman has in stock at the time. At the moment it is Mobil Delvac 15/40

Why would anyone use a thinner oil in the tropics ?? a slightly thicker oil makes more sense as after shutdown the thicker viscosity oil will stick better, ready to give protection on startup than a thin oil running straight back into the sump ,, 372.000 klm Valvoline super diesel.

Crazy Dog

I use Synforce oil in my 80 series and have found it to be okay.

I also put their All Terrain 80 in the gearbox where it is wonderful for taking the notchy shift out of the box and has improved the gear change.
