places we should stop at.

You need to give more detail
Type of vehicle
Do you intend to tent it all the time
have you tented it with the 2 children before - experience.
How do you intend to keep the kids amused. If you want to stop a lot and run the kids around and swim. I would suggest a minimum of 4 weeks for the trip
I would suggest looking at Hiring a Camper Trailer and buying the book "Camps Australia" then doing a couple of trial weekends out of
Melbourne and see how the family likes it.
Then you can decide if you need to
camp out on the western roads or hug the coast roads and stay at Caravan Parks or take Cabins on your way. If the kids like to be near to
the beach then you will need to take this in.Remember it is very dry and inland roads will be a little quite for the Kids.

Anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 months depending on how long you stop in
places and how slow you drive.
Key
places to stop at would be anywhere from the Whitsundays to
Stanage bay to The Big Banana, depending on whether you like the solitude of national parks or the rat race (and prices) of high tourist areas, the reason you are not getting to many replies is that your question is too open ended and vague, someone could type a three page essay on
places to see along the east coast.
People have no idea on your interests or hobbies, if you do some of your own reseach then ask some questions on specific
places and
places similar you might have a bit more luck.
Either that or do what the rest of us do and just follow your nose, that's the best way to travel on holiday, ask questions at info centres and local stores when you get into town, nothing beats local knowledge.
