Round abouts work
well in moderate traffic conditions, but it seems to be down to a 1/2 sec decision on wether to to go or stop these days!. The one up the road from us has duel lanes from five directions, Gets bloody scary at times, I need at least one second to think!!. One less worry out in the sticks i guess.
Cheers Axle.

If you want to see Roundabouts gone mad, go to
Darwin. Its claustrophobic!!!!

Maaaate!
You ain't seen nothin' til you see the Brittania roundabout in
Adelaide. It's a real doozy and the government has spent millions on consultant fees to redesign it. They reckon it is going to stay the way it is. For information it is just near the Victoria
Park racecourse and was part of the F1 GP track. It seems like a car race is still on there every time I drive through.

It's all pretty simple if everyone remembers a couple of things:
1. Give Way to any vehicle on the round-a-bout approaching from your right - if there are no other controls such as Stop Signs (means bring your vehicle to a complete stop and give way to ALL vehicles) or a Give-Way which
sign simply means to give way.
2. Use indicators if intending to turn off round-a-bout
Now that wasn't too difficult was it just a matter of remembering a couple of simple rules and o'h yes a little bit of courtesy goes a looong way too.

You forgot something, the left lane is for only the FIRST and SECOND turns, the right lane is for the SECOND and THIRD!!!!
ALSO TOO there is a thing called the ZIPPER EFFECT IN NSW that states if a car is in front of you and they are in the left lane they have right of way????? That law came in about 2001 area, surprising how many idiots don't check there rules as most Traffic agencies don't advertise any rule changes!!!!
SCARY
HAY?????
The guy i drive down with to work didnt know that!!!
And courtesy does go a LOOOONNNNNGGGGGGG WAY?
AND PATIENCE!!!!!!!
OH and i'm 32 and male.

DIO,
You have clearly never tried to navigate the Brittania at knock off time. I will take another route than try to get through it, especially from the North when you have cars entering it before you from behind your right shoulder.
Shudder...

Hi ya traveller2 i am very much aware of the road rules, and here's a tip for roundabouts! Don't so much as watch the entry closes to you but the next one round, as then you can enter because the next one on your right is "blocked" until that vehicle has passed, this was a trick shown to me by a professional truck driver andi use it quite a bit, also keep an eye out for the C*&k head that comes into the roundabout full tilt, they pop up quite frequently as i think you know!!!!!

I drive a bus ;-))) get really sick of the richard craniums that think the 'main' road has right of way and the ones that think the car on the right has right of way.
ANYTHING in the roundabout before you has right of way.
Brings them down after they've tooted you and the whole busload of schoolkids waves back!!!

More and more are being replaced in
Brisbane now with traffic lights.
The volume of traffic is so large that only the through-traffic on the main
routes gets a go - the minor road entries to the round-a-bouts just build up huge lines of stationery traffic.

AVA, in
Melbourne they are even putting traffic lights on the roundabouts now. I have been on multiple roundabouts OS at times. Horses for courses, not necessarily a replacement.
The of course they designed
Canberra as a roundabout, traffic lights and all........ ;-)))

Always fun driving through Noosa shire on the way to
tewantin. Fatsos not the quickest off the mark at the best of times, let alone when w@nkers in convertable BMW's are trying thier best to beat thier PB time from the Country Club to the Cafe.
Was reduced almost to tears last saturday, was coming back from a surf at Tee Tree point when I was cut off by a current model Jaguar
sedan; number plates (I $hit you not) 'DICK01'. Some people have just got more money than sense!
Was stationary for almost a minute till I regained my composure, smart car behind me wasn't impressed though :).

Only 1 bloke has that plate , is a pom by birth ;is back on the tube with Marcia and some old washed up flower giver who thinks he can still sing and an obnoxious radio jock whose only claim to fame is that he can swear on tv and belittle people and get paid to do so.

"1. Give Way to any vehicle on the round-a-bout approaching from your right "
If you drive defensively you often have to give way when they are 30m before the roundabout!
There's one near us where the minor road traffic doesn't get a look in and you have to nudge out into the lane until someone displays some courtesy, or can't get around you, and waves you in.
It's another horses for courses and what work at one time or place doesn't work at another.
common sense is more important that courtesy...........sometimes.
Oh, and approach the roundabout at an appropriate speed..ie. be able to stop comfortably, whatever the priority of the road.

Met my first round about in the UK in 1977. I went round..and round...and round..looking for the right exit in the snow and ice.
One in
Sheffield was just plain dangerous at peak hour.
But if ya REALLY luv em, try Paris. There's no rules...you can even reverse backwards on the roundabout..if you're French.
I'm told the "smart cars" there can be lifted into a
parking spot. Kinda makes a 3 point turn look cruisy :))

Here in QLD its "when in doubt put in a round a bout" and if that doesn't fix it put in traffic lights as
well.

The magic roundabout, I thought it was, I drove through that when I was 17 on my first trip to UK, spent a bit of time in Swindon, the roundabout was the most memorable part of the town though..... Apparantly a pedestrian was killed the 1st day or week it was opened trying to cross it, no suprises there!

If some council traffic clown sees this and installs one out here we will all know who to blame.
Thanks Andrew!!
It is handy that there is a hospital with an accident and emergency department nearby ...

Took me a while to work out from the pics how this thing actually works but after coming to grips with the concept I reckon it would be a piece of pie!
The most amazing thing about it is that the traffic goes clockwise around the outside of it (like on a normal roundabout) but actually goes ANTI-clockwise closer to the centre!
This means that you don't need to go all the way around the sucker to turn right. Great idea and from the stats it seems to work.

Try the one in Colchester, UK, same as Swindon but bigger!!! I had to negotiate my way round on my driving test and then every other week going too and from college!!!!
Believe me I don't complain about roundabouts in
Australia no matter how busy they are, only the people who don't know how to use them and indicate!
