I am having a intermittent problem with gear not changing down on climb even with paddle to the floor and speed down below 50. Happens only sometimes. Also sometimes there is a ticking noise (electronic rather than mechanical) coming from the rear when it is changing down. I take it to the garage..it behaves perfectly. Any comments or advice will be appreciated.

OK, I'll have a go. Checked, changed the gearbox oil lately? Whats the level? I know on my 4.7 there are no marks!. Do they still have a kick down switch at full pedal travel? Operating? Mine can be a bit slow and If i can anticipate I manually shift (nearly typed it!). "Intermittent" may seem more likely electrical than mechanical.
Which box, 4,5 speed?

Thanks vuduguru! Will check oil levels. It's a 4 speed box. Problem is very intermittent...only seems to do it to me (if you know what I mean). You certainly know when it's going to refuse to shift ..as if its wants you to whisper "shift now" to it! Normally at full pedal it shifts. I do manually shift (it!) on steep climbs otherwise revs drop to below 1500. I shall do the oil ckecks etc and report back. In the meantime if you get any more brain waves..pleasew sent us know. Can you explain the ticking prior to shifting (intermittent also!)

Pleasure, Can't explain the ticking ( if it was a 3.0L nissan you could attribute it to the time bomb effect).
Mine's a 5 speed and its slow to shift from reverse to drive when cold, eg. when reversing out of the driveway. Oil viscosity may have an impact, too thick may make it slow. Sludged galleries perhaps? I think an oil change and service would be a good start. Wouldn't hurt to check the related electrics, contacts etc.
If you are in QLD there is a mob that trick them up, ie. get them changing more quickly, smoother. I think they replace a component that contains the oil galleries. I think it may be these Guys
Good luck!

The ticking was (is) the selanoid on the gas tank as I put pressure on the pedal!- which sound right. The mrs never hears it, she reckons (What ticking?) I think your suggestion about a service maybe the way to go. I considered a 3L T/D Nissan at one stage ...but I mainly wanted to tow a caravan and do the loop. Almost everyone I spoke to suggested this would be unwise. Most people love what they own......but we have to give some credence to experience and good common sense. Ah QLD....am from the cold joint down south ...but still on the mainland!
