Thinking of going there to see the sights, and wondered how cold it gets. Liveable? Cool? Refreshing? Brass Monkey? Frosty? Your collective wisdom appreciated.

It can get quite cold at night. When I was there last year in late August, it did get quite cold at night. Being full of a head cold at the time didn't help either. But the days are lovely.

hi russell - warmer than down south - coolish nights - however give Brendon&carmel reynolds at Willow Springs sheep station (reynoldswsp@bigpond.com.au) a buzz for better info. they have accomm. camping sites (bit prim at mom) but the other cottages r spot on. in addition they have a 4/5 hour trip around their prop called Skytrek which is
well known medium range - however if experienced ask them to do the Moonwalk and maybe the widowmaker. great people. tell them barrie/joy advised/sent you . u'll have a great time. also if have time/money go further up to Arkaroola (
gammon ranges) fab place

Thanks for that - appreciate it - sounds as if it's bearable for the kids. By the way, I'm poring over the map looking for
Alpana (?) station - the one with the Mt Samuel track on it. Anyone can quickly point to it, and perhaps an email address for the owners????Russell S

Russell,
Brass monkeys, even when topped up with port!
There is a website[can't remeber url] that has temperature stats for most towns on it.
I haven't looked at a map for confirmation, but I reckon
Alpana is just south of
Blinman, & Mt Samuel P.A.R. is to the north of the Parachilna to
Blinman Rd.
Best map is the RAA's
Flinders Ranges map. You'll get heaps of other info & ideas from perusing it carefully.
For a top spot to have a rest, call into the
Cradock hotel, south of
Hawker, & tell 'em Rick sent you. Dave & Julie know how to have fun & she does top tucker.
Enjoy.

An excellent other text/reference is published by the Royal Geographical Society of S.A.
It is called: 'Explore the
Flinders Ranges'. It has a very good touring/highways/byways section, with snippets & anecdotes & historical bits throughout. Other sections include flora, geology, towns, etc.
I have both books & I value the RGS book more , but Moonie's book is also quite OK.
A publication called 'Plant Identikit - common plants of the
Flinders Ranges', by Nevill Bonney is a beaut little pocket book. Only costs a few small $'s.
Finally, another good reference, that includes a huge part of l Aussie as
well, is 'Outback - South Australia and Central Australia', published by the touring dept of the RAA of S.A. The author is Stuart Nicol. It's a good read before any planning is finalised

Russell,
Great place the Flinders. Could get fairly cool overnite but the days should be OK. Just be carefull if camping that you are not in the riverbed. When it rains it buckets down and almost in minutes you have a raging torrent.
Alpana Station is about 6km south of
Blinman and has very good accomodation Contact

Hi Russel,
I live about 100km south of the Northern Flinders as the flow cries and we had a minus 10 last year. But that wasan extreme event.
On the whole you may experience, from June through to mid August, days of around 15 to 22 and nights around minus 2 to minus 5.
I always think of FNQ at that time of year but never seem to get away.
Warm socks are a must in winter here in the mid south!!!
It is a very refreshing climate however and you should enjoy your visit.
Cheers, Willem

Thanks, Willem, am looking forward to it. It's more the kids I've got to think about with the cold. They tend to kick their covers off etc, but the cold might ingrain some new habits. I've also got a nice bed warmer (the lovely wife).Russell S

Russell,
Regarding availability of the RGS book, a professional bookshop should be able to source it...if they can't, maybe that adjective does not describe them.
You could try the RGSitself - here's the details:

Adelaide SA 5001
Office hours 9.30 to 1.00 pm, Tuesdays
phone 08 8207 7265 fax 08 8207 7247
