Hi there,
well only 4 weeks till our trip north.
We were told from some travellers that its worthwhile doing a river cruise in
Cooktown and was wondering if any of you have done this and if you have any names of operators.

There was one operator when we were there in 1999. We booked, went back at appointed time to find they'd over booked and only had room for 2 out of 3 of us. We said no. Looked like a nice cruise with a bit of history, in a small boat. We were only there for one day so another booking wasn't an option.

If the trip's worth doing, it would be the only thing worth doing in
Cooktown, except maybe to drive right past....
Spent 3 days there last year and it was the windiest, most miserable 3 days of my life, I reckon :)
The pub opposite the caravan
park ran out of food, and served microwaved leftovers at full price - it was awful.

I think this is a very negative view. Just because one pub runs out of food and you struck bad weather and did not look around to find out what else was there.
The things we found interesting there were the atmosphere of a town that was different to anything else we have seen in QLD, the
lookout from the
hill and the history, the old run down garden and the way they are rejuvenating it, the Captain
Cook Museum, Black Mountain. It is a good place to break your journey if you are touring the
Bloomfield track.
We found it an interesting place to visit. If you did not then open your eyes or stay at home.

Thanks for the comments everyone. We will be there early October and we are hoping for nice weather. Travelling up the Bloomfield with NRL Grandfinal night being spent at the Lions Den...
Then
Cooktown for a look around we havent decided yet whether we stay in
Cooktown or head to Endeavour Falls....of course the way I see it is that
Cooktown is a great place to base yourself or stop over to explore all of the areas around it.
Oh, almost forgot will also be heading up to
Hope Vale for a look at the Coloured Sands....

Hi Cram
Did a river cruise in
Cooktown back in 2002 and it was really quite good. The tour op made it interesting enough which I'm sure they work out with each trip what their paying customers want. The cruise went for a few hours with refreshments mid arvo. Sorry I can't remember the name of it as all that info is still packed away in storage.
Maybe you could ask the caravan park/motel/locals or another tourist who they would suggest? Remember, word of mouth will see you in the right direction.
Enjoy your cruise, if you decide to go on one.

Hi
Cooktown is a great place!!!. Things to do
firstly enjoy the drive from
Cairns, it is spectacular!
spend an hour or two at the
cemetery
dirve(or walk if keen) up to the
lookout on top of
grassy hill
visit the captain
cook museum, the one in the old convent building
have fish and chips at
the wharf(coral trout is the way to go)
We own a block in the main street and hope to build a house there one day with
views to the river, just hope it doesn't become to commercialised.
Enjoy!
Regards Lyndon
