Hi guys, I am considering buying a 99 st petrol patrol with 116k on the clock, dual fuel, I was wondering if any of you st owners or previous owners have any thoughts in regards to serviceable life, fuel usage, and towing ability...
Plus any other useful info.
Thanks in advance!

Aw ... come on do a search. Try,"No 4 cylinder", "bang", "had to be towed" "POS"

G'day Gecko,

I am led to believe the 4.5lt is a direct descendant of the old TB42, so is quite reliable, the drive line is as tough as they come. Not 100% sure of the max towing weight, but my 2.8 GU is 2800kgs so it would be at least that. Very easy to get acc for them, I am more than happy with my 99 GU. If it is a replacement for the Jack, you will notice the firmer ride, my sisters 03 Jack is very smooth.

cheers Stefan

I also have the 2.8 GU and am more than happy but the 4.5 has heaps more power and grunt than the TD (until I start playing with it :)). Its thirst will be tamed by the LPG but make sure that the valves and head is very well checked by a qualified and trusted LPG technician as these donks have a reputation for burning valves when subjected to thier almost mandatory LPG conversions.

The TB45 (4.5 petty) is a direct descendant of the TB42, infact apart from the plastic shield and 300cc's they are the same engine. The 4.5 is not as strong in the upper rev range (145kw Vs 185kw) but pulls like a loco down low and makes a good tow vechile if in auto.

Whats the dosh required?

4.5's can be had for ~18k and less (few on OL have paid $16k with bar, lights and winch) now.. not many want thirsty petrols anymore.. perfect buyers market.

I have a 2000 st patrol dual fuel
It was already on gas when I bought it. I have done close to 100000 km in the 4 years I have had it.
Took it from Perth to the east coast and back without any dramas. Average 300km per 88lts of gas when towing the camper trailer and with a roof rack.
Havent had any problems with the motor until now. It is running rough at idle on gas and petrol so am taking it in for a check next week.
Fuel usage around town is about the same as when towing given that it is mostly loaded up with the wife and 5 kids.
Unloaded on a country run I get an extra 100km at least out of a tank of gas.

Evan
