Has anyone travelled from Normanton to Booraloola recently? The road is unsealed but how bad/good is it? We have a 22' caravan with simplicity suspension - but not an offroader - is it feasible to attempt the trip.
Its half the distance of the Mt Isa route (black top) but not worth it if it breaks the van.
Appreciate any input/advice

Bill,
I can only offer a limited report as we came from Booraloola to the Kingfisher Camp turnoff in mid July. I would say you would have no problems for that part of the trip as long as you drove to the conditions. If you were considering going on to King Ash Bay from Booraloola you would find it rather more corrugated than the road into Booralooa. However there were plenty of normal road vans in there although there was only 20klm of rough.

Hope this is of some help,
Cheers,
Al-one

Hi Bill,
Pat and I travelled this road in June this year and found it quite O.K. We have a Phoenix off road and a cruiser with a custom boat loader on top and the whole rig performed well. We tracked Normanton to Cape Crawford, (nice stopover) and then up to Booraloola, you will not have any problems. There are plenty of places to camp off road,we found a large gravel pit which was great but did not keep the co-ordinates. Have a great trip, if you come thru Gladstone give me a call.
Cheers, Nev.

Bill,
Must be too early in the morning, I was thinking of the wrong road, we actually came in from the west, Roper Bar, and my coments apply to that road. Although we did go to Normanton, we did not travel across the top road. Be aware that apart from Doomadgee, there is no fuel on that road, both Hells Gate and Wollogorang are closed according to my information. Sorry about the misleading information.
Cheers, Nev.

Gday Bill,

I am pretty sure my mate travelled this route in June of this year and he encountered a few drama's. He reported it to be very rough and had to carry out a few repairs when he got to Darwin. Somehow he managed to severe all his wiring to his camper trailer and his handbrake line I believe. He said there were numerous sizeable rocks on the road and these were just peppering his trailer and underbody of the cruiser.

Mind you knowing my mate he would not neccessarily have been driving to the conditions.

He did say he loved every minute of it though!

Geez Bill,

You have been getting some dodgy information this morning. I have been told that said mate did not travel this road but another.

Sorry mate.
