As far as i know acrylic is more likely to chip when knocked/ stone damage etc. Prob easily scratched & needs to be polished to shine.

As said 2 pack would be the best way to go.

I actually thought acrylic was less likely to chip, but less resiliant to scratches as it is a softer paint.

Enamel sets harder, so resists scratching more but chips more easily.

And 2-pack actually uses a chemical reaction to set, so has stronger bonding and resists both more?

Not a painter but that was my understanding.

Ok first things first??? What is it made of??? Second thing is how long do you want it to look good for and finally, how much effort do you want to put into it to keep it looking A1???

If ths shak is of aluminium construction then you will need to undercoat it with 1k to seal ally, then 2pak hifill and rub back, 2pak, and clear! two pak is the best as it lasts longer and less matinence, enamel is good, arcrylic is good, but acry tends to fade over 5 years, were as 2 pak will be shiny for a number of years with less maintenace. Unless your handy with a buff and cutting compound and glazing finish then its 2 pak all the way!!!!!!

i soent three years in a opanel shop and 2 years in another as a painters assistant and have done many a weird request to paint things from back plumbers comparments and tool boxes and trialers, and my boss taught me well.

Mate,
Strip it down, and bring it up to me, bloke here does sandblasting and painting with 2 pak. His usual jobs are semi trailers of all sorts, amoungst other things, and he only uses top quality paint.
Just did my sons tandem caravan and that was only $800.
Came up a treat for an old van.
Suspect a trailer would only be around $200 or so.
Dont paint it without sandblasting it, it makes a great job of it.

Cheers Pesty

Spend the extra and do it properly, you'll be pi&*ed in acouple of years when you have to do it again.

Get pestys mate to do it and he may be able to treat it for rust mits at the same time.

Hey Pesty,,

Don't get me wrong, I would love to do mine,, seriously thought about it. But I thought, that all that money to go out on those desert roads and get it sand blasted again would be a waste of time and money.

The Trak Shak paint came up real good with a bloody good polish.

I have already got rid of all the stone chips ect from the drawbar and etcher/primed it.
The underneath will be stoneguarded, and then repainted before we head out camping, on my days off

The coil springs were swapped left to right , as it had a 22 m lean to the down side. Now its just on 5mm diff, to the hi side side .

Basically general maintenance, the main thing, the tent section is good, water and dust proof ( we hope )

Cheers Mate

Made of steel only 1 paint worth putting on and thats Killrust , painted my old 6x4 trailer 18yrs ago and is just comming up for a repaint about now.,, stonechips ect you can allways just touch up with a brush for the first 5/10 yrs or so and no one can tell the difference in colour shade.

I am at the end of doing my camper trailer ATM.

After a fair bit of research I ended up using 2 pak polyurethane which is flexible (as much as paint can flex) and almost as good as powder coating, this will resist the stone chips much better than other types of paint.

The trailer was sand blasted ($150) then I used a epoxy etch primer and top coat. It has come up very well and should last for some time.

IMHO I wouldnt use an enamel it wont last long and you will be back to square one.

Cheers

The Trak Shak is made of galvanised steel, all the welds are cold gall treated prior to painting. Not sure what the original paint was.

At one stage, prior to 1996, they tried hot dipping the trailer after it was built but the heating caused the trailer to distort slightly. This compromised the dust sealing on the trailer which was one of the selling points.

As to what paint to use, I don't know.Mine is over 10 years old now, most of the paint still comes up looking good after a decent wash. The bits that don't are where the paint has been sandblasted off by ten years of outback roads.

I must admit I have wondered about getting it resprayed but I reckon I'll do that in about 10 years time. Just before I sell it.

Painting 2 pac is easy, if your BIL can paint enamel, and 2pak is harden enamel, then he can paint 2pak or poly urethane. If you do go 2pak you can add a plasticiser and that allows flexibility. dont forget the stone guard. and i agree all the work in painting is preparation, so don't fudge it, especially as you may have to repaint in 2 years or so????

If your in newcastle i could help???
