Jack fuel economy after extrictor removal

I have been asked in the past to post fuel economy figures for the Jack after removing the exhaust restrictors.
On a trip from Bathurst to Blackett down the bells line of road and return I covered 326 ks and used 37.2l which I worked out to 8.81km per litre or 11.4l/100 and for old farts I worked it out to 24.6mpg. The return trip took 2 hours so while I was more restrained then normal I was not dawling. I also went and got a load of firewood in a 6 by 4 box trailer with hungry boards on the sides and achieved 13.88l/100. This was only loaded one way of course. and doing no more than 90. Next I will stick a uni filter on. Wish wifes 3lt Paj was as good on fuel. Mind you its hard to work hers out because she wont fill it

Must be a woman thing, my wife used to be the same. She would wait until nearly empty & then stick $20 in so it was now quarter full.
It took years to get her to put $20 in when gauge was about half, so at least she was running with a reasonable amount in the tank.
We've bean married thirty odd years & recently she actualy fills it right up on a regular basis. Ah, what would you do without em.

I am curious if you are running the 3.2 or the 3.5 v6 ,manual or auto. Either way the figures sound pretty good. We achieved 17.66 litres /100km on a 4000 km trip last summer with A/C on, back was full of gear, roof basket full also.Travelling a bit faster than 90 !
Maybe it's something we should look at down track. Did you notice any improvement in power or torque? I've heard that it makes the throttle response a bit sharper.What did you find?

Hi Boldjack,
Its a 3.5 manual which is supposed to be the moswt economical combination. Its also only got mild ats on it at monent with 45lb front and 35lb in the back tyres.
Yes a noticable improvement in power above 2000rpm, slight loss of torque below 1500rpm only noticable in first gear high range.
On a light throttle their is no noise increase but when you floor it their is an increase in noise(not unpleasent) The Jack I brought was the quickest of the ones I test drove. Its now quicker than the bosses v8 100 . I find I catch sedans on long steep pulls , and that is good for a 2 ton 4wd

We have a 3.5 auto with 265/75 all terrains and like you say they are quite quick.
I like all your comments, except I am slightly concerned about the loss of torque at low rpm. Do you think it's enough to effect low speed steep hill (low range) stuff? You know, when you're trying to use the throttle nice and steady over uneven rocks.

Hi bold jack,
The fuel fig was obtained using 96oct. THe loss of low down torque is only evident in high first towing a trailer up a quite steep hill.
Do not forget your speedo and odo will be reading up to 10% slow because of the large tyres. As soon as we put larger tyres on the paj the economy dropped. I get better economy towing a 4.2 metre boat than the paj does with a canadian canoe on the roof(15l100). Pumping the tyres up helpes and I added an oil based additive to the drive line for extra protection and this could slighty cut friction. Also I try and coast up to lights and use cruise to maintain a constant speed .
I found before the throttle was too touchy, . First time I have had to much power..lol

I calculated a 7.3 % difference in speed with 265/75s,that is when your speedo indicates 100 km/h your really doing 107.3 km/h. Also when you're doing your fuel calcs your odometer is showing less distance than what you actually travelled. In our case we must remember add 7.3% ,that is for every 100km indicated on the odometer we actually travelled 107.3 km. I think some people may forget to allow for this and blame the tyres for more than they actually impact fuel consumption.
It looks like there are more pros than cons .

Tell you what, they are great fuel figures. Did the same to my Rodeo (3.2 manual) and a mates Jack (3.5 auto) and didnt see any economy improvement at all really. In fact the Jack was/is doing around 17-20lt per 100kms with a camper.The Rodeo is a steady 13-15lt per 100km's regardless of weight/towing. Did find a bit more mid to top end power though.

Mate dirt roads and aggressive tyres will knock your fuel economy arround, and stick to a speed where the vehicle is doing it easy. Mine has got a bbar and driving lights on it . Also read my reply above on fuel

As one who asked for some figures, I thank you for your post.
They seem good. I havent removed the restrictors yet & can get
12 L to 100k, non towing & driven very sedately. Averaged 14.9
L/100 over 13000k outback trip earlier this year towing a C/t &
with 4 adults on board. I thought that was pretty good. Same
setup was back to 18L/100 if driven at 110k plus on the blacktop.
A light foot certainly improves consumption......oldbaz.

Hi Barry,
The manuals seem to be much better than the autos. Its seems to be better than my old 22r fourrunner towing my boat, its doesnot know its their were as the runner use to struggle a bit.
Biggest problem to getting good economy is me, darn hard vehicle to drive sedately. But about 90 seems a good speed if you can bear it. You will notice a bit more noise pulling hard in 4th gear towing .
The 3.5 compares favourably to the 4lt hilux at work. It gets coarse above 3500 rpm where as the Jack is silky smooth for a v6
Going to get a Uni filter shortly and try that
