i am after a new set of tyres for my nissan patrol and am looking for some advice.
i currently have 265x70r16 and am looking for a fatter tyre possibly 285x75r16. will this affect my speedo and odo that much?
also i am tossing up between the coopers a/t and the bfg a/t.
i tow a trailer for work, mainly on bitumen but sometimes have to go into sand.
the majority of my 4wdriving for pleasure is sand (on the beach) but also encounter some gravel, rocky stuff.

any suggestions would be appreciated

It will affect your speedo by 6%... ie. it will understate the speed by that amount.

It will also reduces the effectiveness of the engine in putting power down reducing the revs at higher speeds... if you're pulling a trailer or in sand it will probably be noticeable.

It does have a larger footprint which in sand may compensate depending on how much you have deflated the tyres.

THANKS ANDREW,
SO WHAT WOULD YOU RECOMMEND.
SHOULD I STICK WITH THE 265X70 OR SHOULD I TRY SOMETHING ELSE.
I REALLY JUST WANT THE BEST TYRES FOR SAND BUT WITH THE MAJORITY OF MY KM'S ON BITUMEN

We have Cooper ATR's, great tyres but one thing to look for with the ATR's is there ply rating and make sure they are light truck.

The ATR's we have on our Hilux arn't the light truck version....we thought all Coopers were light truck when we had them fitted when the vehicle was new, we found out later that for $20.00 more a tyre we could of got light truck ones.

With another set of Cooper ST-C's that we have we got told the speedo would be out be 4.8%, it ended up being spot on with the new tyres so for 12 mths we finally found out why people kept over taking us.

As for sand Andrew would be better to talk to about that as we havn't done alot of that.

Regards Richard

Hi vbdaniel
I have Mickey Thompsons Baja MTX's 265/75/16 on my Navara and i am 3 klms slower on the speedo than my GPS. Mickey Thompson make a great tyre. Have a look at a few of the comments earlier on Cooper tyres and there Warranty.

Might be OK for sealed roads or Sand but I found them to Chip easy on the Gibb River Rd, I was very dissapointed in a tyre that made in USA that should have done better

Hello Frankn

Had a look at mickey thompsons on an 80 series same as ours on our last trip. We have Cooper St 285/75/16 and the mt's were the same size. I suspect that the 2 tyres might come from the same factory/manufacturer,i'm not saying they do but the sidewall writing font and general construction looks virtually identical. Also the cooper "bumps" in the sidewall where presumably the belts are joined etc were present on the MT's. Quite possible in these times where multiple brands are owned by one group.

Regards

Greg

P.S. MT seem to be making a fairly large impact on the market.

Andrew was quite right re the 6% speed differential. I have fitted Cooper Discoverer S/T on my Nissan GU in LT265/75R16 and have found them very good for our touring. Slightly noisier than my previous BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A, but I believe they are a lot tougher. Did well over 25,000km touring last year on all types of roads & tracks (incl sand) and NOT ONE PUNCTURE! Hope it helps.

My next set very soon will be Bridgestones , made in Australia, was Quoted $239 each today for the Dueler A/Ts, I have tried Hankooks size 265/70R/16 , not happy with them so will be going back to size 265/75R/16, then the speedo comes back into line as well,
I will have 3 Hankook size 265/70R/16 with about 3/4 tread left for sale $50 each
