i am considering a power upgrade for my nissan patrol 2004 gu st tdi. i believe with just the restriction taken out after the turbo, and a mandrel bent 3" exhaust you can achieve an extra 15 -20%.
has anybody else had this upgrade and what do you think?

i am also looking at the gas injection upgrade.
any feedback would be appreciated

Hi vbdaniel
I have had the gas fitted to my 2003 STR Navara 3ltr.td and what a difference. If you look at the question earlier today about the 75 series V8 cruiser i have posted the results of a dyno run on my Navara. You didn't say whether you have a 3.0 ltr. or a 4.2 ltr. If it is a 3.0 ltr i have been told that 2.5 in.exhaust is as big as you should go,as you can lose power if you go to big. My exhaust is straight out no muffler with no increase in exhaust noise or very little. If you go to Diesel Gas Australia web site you will see that you can get about 40% more power from the 4.2's . I hope this can help you,any other questions just arsk.
Regards Frankn

thanks frankn,
mine is a 4.2
can you tell me, is there a substantial govt. rebate on having the gas fitted?
have you had it fitted for very long and if so, any probs?
i believe there is a considerable reduction in fuel consumption

Yeah sounds about right for the mods you are talking about. I can't see any downside to these mods, it's all positive. That is about where I started on my GU and it has went on from there. There is huge gains to be had in the 4.2's. So much so that I am now nearly 100% over standard, and I have heard of others that are over 100% above factory settings.

The gas sounds like it adds a bit also but I have not been down this road so I can't give any good info on this.

Best of luck,
Trevor.

Go Offroad has posted most of the mods I have done to get my 126 rear wheel KW's but I started at 66 rear wheel KW's. I have also added a Safari front mount i/cooler and run max 14PSI boost.

Completely changes the slug to awesome. One thing, if you want bottom end torque, stick with factory turbo and get a competent turbo specialist to work their magic with it. You will lose a bit of top end dyno HP, by not modifying turbo, but will gain heaps more low rpm torque.

Regards, Trevor.

Hello vbdaniel,
Check out this months 4wd monthly mag...there is a dvd with this mag that details the mods you are contemplating.
The Patrol used was a stock 4.2 turbo wagon which went from 70kw at the rear wheels to about 90kw.
Hope this helps.

Just the exhaust isnt worth doing, but we retime the pump as well, and we dont use the cast "supposed" 3" dump pipes, we make our own, fit a boost controller, and change exhaust to 3" mandrel bent, and dyno tune, this goes to around 100-105kw at the wheels,a nd with turbo mod goes to around 125kw @ wheels and nearly 500 N.

Fuel economy usually improves by around 1.5-2lt per 100km as well, unless using all the extra power.

On a recent trip, I got 12.2lt per 100km, with our power upgrade, fully loaded, 260lt fuel, 120lt water etc, hwy, running 35's and 15.5lt per 100km across trans railway and canning, up to 18lt per 100km, on the Tanami, sitting on 140-150kph with 20 psi in the 35's.

Forgot to add, current lpg has an issue with pre detonation Im not hapy with right now, and by the time its realised, its to late, so im waiting for the new technology to arrive, which will make this a more viable proposition.

thanks darren,
im under the impression that you do these mods yourself.
if so can you give me an estimate of the cost of the upgrade you have described and your location. are you in perth?

We are in Geelong in Vic, but stage one, which is pump re time, exhaust, boost controller and dyno tune is $1895, and stage 2 which is turbo mod if dynoed after stage one and 2, once only is another $1340.

To all those wanting a web link.... here is one.

MTQ TURBO'S

I have found the torque curve to come on strong much later than that in this website. You can see this in my dyno chart on my rig page.

Hope it helps.
