Hi Guys,
Me & the missus are going to
Port Douglas and the
Daintree in about 2wks. A mate said that l should get a hired 4wd to explore the
Daintree area.
Do l need one or can l hire a
sedan??
I have a twin locked 80 in Vic, so no orries about experience etc. just trying to save a buck and have a good holiday.
Cheers
BoB

Hey BoB, we are off to the same place as you later next month as
well.
Once you cross the
daintree you can head up the
Bloomfield track, the recommendation is 4wd vehicles for this area as there are some steep climbs and also some
water crossing but from previous queries on explor oz some say you can do the track in 2wd vehicle without any problem.
If you wanted to do the
CREB track then you would need a 4wd but I am pretty sure the CREB is closed at present.
You may find that some hire companies won't allow their cars to cross the
Daintree River, I know that was the case many years ago when I was up that way.
Checkout the stuff on this site in relation to the
Bloomfield Track it will give you some good information.

Gday BoB
A
sedan would not be advisable on the Bloomfield and for a few bucks more you can rent an Xtrail or Rav4 that would find it easy going. I was up there in June this year and the track was a bit potholed and steep in sections and a
sedan would find it hard getting grip on those potholed slopes, add to that all your bags and passengers etc... and it would be hard going in a
sedan, but not so an all wheel drive. While in
Cooktown look at Endeavour and Isabella Falls both near
Hope Vale community (40min north of
Cooktown).

Bob,
I have just come back from doing this trip in my x-trail, up the
Bloomfield Track to
Cooktown. My vehicle is modified, lifted, better a/t tyres and protection, but the standard one will make it.
The exy will easily do it, as will a Ford Laser on most days. BUT, the there are a few steep sections and
water crossings which would prove more difficult in a 2wd. If it is raining, just watch the slippery sections. Most of the steep hills have been reinforced with concrete to aid traction. After the Bloomfield River,(which has a higher weir crossing), the road can get narrow and steep.
Stick with the x-trail, hire it from
Cairns and enjoy it.
Feel free to send me an email for any other questions you may have.
