Mine did the same found that there was play in the shaft out of the transfer box where the linlage is clamped on ( up and down movement). If it was held up (only moved about 3mm ) could put it back into high2 Had this problem 500klms from home. all I did to fix was to split a washer and slid it over the shaft under the clamp to take out the play. actually wired in and has been good for 18 months
Hope this helps

It has a little bit of play in it but it wont go back into h2. It doesn't feel like its in low (locked in engaged) but it is and when i push it into h2 its like it goes in but its still in low. Might take a week or so to sort out.I will try out the other hints people have given to thanks guys.

The same thing happened to my Daihatsu. All I did was disconnect the wire and cleaned the connector at the transfer case. Over time dust and moisture can make the connectors play up.

Brad sounds like you have two problems...one the 4wd light and the other is sticking into 4wd.

Good responses to try and sort the linkages and hopefully release the shifter. The other is making sure the light works.

If you are certain it is in 4wd (jack a front wheel and try spinning the front propshaft with hubs engaged) Pull the plug in the shifter housing that switches the 4wd light and just use a wire or split pin to jump beween the two terminals in the switch plug....does the dash light illuminate? If yes then your problem is the plug or switch in the transfercase. If not then you need to check for power to switch, dash light globe, wiring etc.

If ther arent power issues then I suspect corrosion in the plug or the actual switch is worn out.

All the best

Matt.

One way to 4WD is working.
Leave the hub out, leave in 2WD and check if you can spin the front shaft. If you can means the 4WD and the hubs are disengaging properly.
Shift into to 4WD and try to spin the shaft again. If shaft spins, 4WD not working. If shaft cannot be spun, check the 4WD light.

Cheers
