Hi everyone,
I have a 80 series Landcruiser turbo diesel with main
tank and sub
tank,I have been having trouble on the main
tank like its running out of diesel and sometimes has cut out on me,when i switch to sub tant its ok ,then i switch back to main, but after a little while it starts to cut out again.
I was wondering if anyone else was having or had this problem if it is a common fault and how to rectify it ?
A very frustrated cruiser man cheers Jon.

Hi Jon c,
Seems like a partial blockage in the outlet of the main
tank or inlet to switchover valve. I would check your fuel filter first though as thatI would check your fuel filter first though as gives the same "running out of fuel" feeling. If the motor will idle on the main
tank without trouble then for sure you have a partial blockage somewhere that is allowing enough fuel through to idle but not enough to be driven normally. Good luck finding it and please post the result when you fix it. We have an 80 also.

Jon,
How many km's are you getting out of your main before it runs out? What about your sub? Might be worth filling both up as
well as a jerry can, then run the main dry and record your km's then do the same for the sub. Then put your jerry in to fill up. I get between 6-700km's main and 290-400 from the aux. Does your 80 have the solenoid change over from main to aux or do you have to pump the fuel with the aux
tank button(early models?)

I don't think it is a matter of running out of fuel. The the fuel in the
tank can't get to the motor because of some blockage somewhere.

All depends on which setup he has for the fuel change over. If its the solenoid change over there is only a tiny amount of fuel line that is 'main
tank only'. Jon C doesnt state how many km's he is getting so I just asked the question.

Hi everyone
Its the solenoid type switch inside the cab ,I think it is standard with the GXL.
Now you mentioned a fuel filter blockage,I have replaced the fuel filter under the bonnet very recently. Is there another filter between that one and the fuel
tank?
Otherwise there must be a blockage in the switch valve.
Cheers Jon.

I had thid this happen many times with my Troopy , Though it has not occured for a while now,
My remedy is this, get yourself a tubeless wheel valve stem, disconnect the main fuel line at the fuel filter , the input side, get the stanly trim knife and whittle off the valve stem until it fits nice and tight into the fuel line , REMOVE BOTH THE FUEL CAPS, set switch to main
tank and put compressed air down the fuel line until you hear bubbling from the main
tank, reset switch to the rear
tank and repeat the process , remove modified valve stem, reconnect fuel line to filter , replace fuel caps, start engine and keep revs at about 1600 until the pocket of air passes through and the problem should be fixed, If it happens again as it did with
mine I then clamped the fuel line between the tanks and the solenoids, remove the fuel lines from
tank side of solenoids and once again put air down from the filter end, if there is some muck in there it might be blown out .

Gday Jon
When it starts dying, stop and open the bonnet and if the primer valve is sucked down hard, you have a blocked strainer in the main
tank. My mate had identical problem, he blew it back with compressed air and it blew off the strainer...if you try that, make sure you open the fuel cap or you will be looking for a new
tank. Most probable cause is algai and treatment is varied...nissan fuel treatment is probably the easiest to get with anti algai in it...
