in NZ, the 2.4L turbo diesel is notorious for blowing head gaskets. Other than that, I have never heard of a Toyo motor one blowing.
Our Troopy has done 230.000km as still does not need oil top ups between changes despite the odd drop that appears on the garage floor - courtesy of a deep
water hole filled with sandy
water that ruined the seals on the engine/gearbox/transfer case.
The rear main seal on the engine is too hard to get at so we put up with the occasional drop.
The Troopy still has the original power, has no strange noises and starts fine so we expect to at least double the km before any work is reqd.

early 1990's factory turboed cruisers (1HDT) where prone to big end failures, and have read on this
forum of another hilux snapping crank shaft, but I think it had been turboed(aftermarket)

YEP in 2002.
My 1985 FJ62 3F landcruiser snapped the crank just over 10,000 klm after complete engine re-build by GEM engines. Right at the moment of distruction I was going around a corner in second doing about 20 klm/h with 3 people on board.
They replaced it with a complete exchange. It didn't even last 12 months before the head cracked.
All in all, with everthing else that went wrong with that vehicle, it was the biggest waste of money I've ever experienced.
