I have just picked up my new but used 120 series Prado 4ltr V6, and am trying to figure out when the timming belt should be done. I have checked the service record booklet and user guide but can only find reference to the diesel engine not the 4ltr pertol which mine is. In reference to the diesel it says to replace at 1500000kms or when the reminder light comes on which is around the 140000kms. But my question is when should I replace it in my petrol powered model? Should I just do it at the 150 same as the diesel?? I always thought they should me replaced around the 100000kms mark but there is no mention of this in the bookletsI have got. Can anyone help me out and shed some light on this matter. Thanks in advance.

4be

From memory, mine was done at 90k (but I could be wrong). Give Toyota a ring.

I very seriously doubt that your vehicle has a timing belt, think chain???

I believe the 120 series V6 has a timing chain and not a belt. That's probably why the service book doesnt refer to it.

Cheers

Thanks to all. Timing Chain hey, I will follow this up with my local Toyota dealer, but me thinks everyone who has been kind enough to answer my post would probably know more than this dealer. Thanks again to all and Happy and Safe four wheel driving.

Before the purchase of my diesel 120 prado I took a test drive in the petrol model. When we returned to the dealership I lifted the bonnet and inspected the engine. I then asked the salesman what was the timing belt change interval ( previously I did some research on the internet and discovered it had a timing chain with no recommended change interval). He had no idea but proceeded to contact the mechanic that was in charge of the servicing. He said it was the same as the diesel. I told the salesman the mechanic seemed to be unsure so out came the service manager. He too seemed to think it need a timing belt and he was sure that they were in stock in the spare parts department. Still looking at the engine I asked the service manager about the service access to the timing belt. He then advised that the rocker covers had to be removed. I asked if the belt was meant to be running in oil. The service mechanic then realised that this engine may use a timing chain instead. The service manager turned red and returned to his office. The salesman asked if I wanted to place an order. I left the dealership confident with the knowledge that these people had no idea about servicing their own products. We eventually brought a diesel prado because we wanted to avoid all confusion and have the well known timing belt changed at the correct interval.

Chain no belt. At least you'll save the servicing $$$ for something else now. Glad you got it 4be, hows the power !!! Did you check the rear door ?? If ok now just keep your eye on it in the future. Hope all going and went well with the purchase. Regards Steve M

Thanks for the advice, power is great drives and looks like a new one. Rear door hinges are fine but I intend to watch them over the years. Really pleased I brought it now always wanted one.
