I'm geting a slight diff whine noticeable at slower (quieter) speeds from the rear diff it seems.

Any observations on what this is likely to mean?

Cheers
Andrew.

Would suggest if its just starting you may be seeing a small loss of pinion preload.

What distance has it covered?

176K.

What would be implications of/solutions for loss of pinion preload?

Cheers
Andrew.

Its easily adjusted if that is what the problem is.
I would change the diff oil first, just to be sure you clean out the system. If there is any moisture in the oil this will go with the change then run if for another 5000 km then take it in for a check.

Hi Andrew
Firstly is your 100# a costant 4x4 if so I would have a carefull check that it the rear diff and not the transfer box.
For the pinnion to loose its preload one of two things need to happen, niether of which should. The pinnion nut has come loose of the pinnion bearing is collapsing. You should get this looked at before you damage the gear set.

agree 100% here,my mate left his jeep diff whine for 12 months before doing anything about it(said to him do some thing about it at the start)just had it done because the noise was unbearable and it was a full rebuild(bearings, shims, ring and pinion)it had the edge and hardening worn off.cheers Paul

hmmm... interesting you say that Ray. My first assessment was transfer case was where the noise was coming from.

I've not taken anything apart, nor got it on the hoist yet... but other ears were pointing at the rear diff...

Hey Andrew

I agree 100% with TD100, I had the same problem and fixed it with a crown wheel, pinion and bearing kit, I still have 2 diff centers on my work bench which need the same treatment, it shouldn't cost more than $ 700 if you get someone to do it or, $ 500 if you take the diff center out and put it back in.

Cheers Steve.

I don't even know where PMH is?? Is it anything like PMS??

I'm not the Subi type anyway.

Was it a V8 like mine?

Red?

With a roof rack?

'n a black bull bar?

Still wasn't me though

All of the above except I couldn't hear if it had the familiar sound of the big bent 8 oiler. It had an ExploreOz tyre cover too.

I was on my way out of town heading up to Paynes Find for the weekend and thought you may be heading in the same direction.

V8D,

We've just got back from a 4 month trip away, so Paynes Find, even though it's just around the corner by comparison, is out of the question right now! I just wanna stay home in my own armchair until next season.

At one time I did aspire to an "Exploroz" wheel cover, but not anymore,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ;) In fact, once I get around to it, my windscreen sticker will be coming off as well,,,,,,,,,,,,

Redneck indeed!!

Take care,

Bilbo
